SAN FRANCISCO: Muni operator “was lost” when bus killed pedestrian
SFGate: City Insider ^ | 2/9/12 | Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer

The Muni operator who faces a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge for running over a 23-year-old woman with his bus in a Castro District crosswalk last summer made a brief court appearance this morning on a procedural matter, and in a hallway interview afterward his attorney said that his client shouldn’t be blamed.

The real culprit, if there were one, said defense attorney Stuart Hanlon, was inadequate supervision at Muni that allowed his client, Wallace Loggins, to drive a 40-foot bus along unfamiliar streets.

“He was was doing everything right, but he was lost,” Hanlon said. “Central Control sent him on a street he didn’t know. I just think it’s an awful accident.”

“He was was doing everything right, but he was lost,”

I'm not sure why being lost would mean it was okay to run over a woman in a crosswalk.

Defense attorney is just trying to attempt a plausible defense.

Good point. I can’t come up with anything better, not given these facts.

I got lost last night while on my way to pick Hubby up from work. I didn’t run over anybody. Guess the people of SLC dodged a bullet there. Of course, I wasn’t driving a bus, so maybe you have to have both elements, lost and the bus, for it to be ok.

...woman crossing 18th and Hartford streets in the Castro district was hit and killed by a Muni bus Friday at 2:30 p.m., according to a San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman.

Hmmm. Remind me to stand far from the curb when walking in SF. The idea that untrained drivers are out there commandeering 40 ft buses on those hilly, narrow streets is terrifying. SF is my least favorite place to drive. Trolleys, cable cars, pedestrians everywhere paying no attention to traffic, and other drivers who consider stopping at red lights optional.

I still don't see why being lost is an excuse for running someone over, though.

Better yet, don’t even venture close to that socialist enclave-—almost as bad as the progressive city of Oakland and Berkeley. I have found excuse after excuse, not to go to that urine-soaked hippyville island near the sea, and the relatives own a property in the Nobb Hill area @ California Avenue. When I was there last , this little puke of a girly-man was starring straight at my crotch; giggling and giving a flirtatious look while drooling; I shouted him down, but the public seemed more disturbed that I took exception to this freak’s come-on. If I were interested in a man, that piece of male excrement would not qualify; why do some gay people want to date the opposite sex, when the queen is more girl than boy in the first place. Or a woman dating a woman who could kick the ...t out of Mohammad Ali? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, other than some of them have disturbed personal identity conflicts.

As a former resident of San Francisco, I knew Muni employees to be some of the worst human beings to walk the face of the earth. At one time in the 80s they found many of the drivers were former rapists. I have seen them smoke on buses which is not allowed. I once had one drive right by me til I yelled him down. He muttered something about stupid White something. I asked him to repeat it out loud but he declined. One guy who worked for the Sheriff’s office told me they came into the jails to recruit drivers. Amazingly these aer high paid union jobs. Just sickening.

How do you supervise a bus driver? The drive is either competent or not. In any event, he is on his own when on a run. There is no standard too low to which lawyers will not stoop.

Is it possible to be a “former rapist”?

They have her on video TEXTING while crossing the street, she should have some culpability for her actions.

I’m not a bus driver but I do work in transportation and have been sent on routes I was unfamiliar with, it is distracting as hell and I have made mistakes.
