President Obama contraception-rule fight marks return of culture wars

They've got nobody to blame for it but themselves.

President Barack Obama, with one swift contraception regulation, accomplished something his rivals have struggled to do: unify the Republican Party and fire up its base.

“You never look for a fight, but you never walk away from a fight, and we will embrace this one a thousand percent,” said Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), a former head of the New Jersey chapter of Right to Life.

On the other end of the Republican spectrum, Connecticut Senate candidate Chris Shays, a supporter of abortion rights, agreed with Smith and called on Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to “abandon your ruling” on the contraception regulation.

There’s good reason for Republicans to welcome the fight: It’s one in a series of culture war issues that have surged to the forefront of the political debate and knocked the economy off the front page. For social conservatives, it dovetails perfectly with this weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference, Rick Santorum’s resurgence in last Tuesday’s caucuses and reaction to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision striking down California’s Proposition 8, which would have reversed a law allowing same-sex couples to marry.

But more than the other rallying points, the battle over contraceptive coverage at religiously affiliated institutions has bound together Republicans of all stripes because it hits core GOP themes: religious liberty, government intrusion and reproduction politics. Perhaps more important politically, it has given Republicans something to talk about other than the economy, just when Obama’s gotten a lift from modest gains.

Notice how when the left is imposing its cultural values on everyone, no one says a word about the war on the culture?

It’s only a “culture war” when someone resists them.

Because this is what the left does, folks.

When a Republican is president and the economy tanks, the state-run media and all the leftist pundits focus solely on the economy.

When the DemocRAT wins and worsens the economy, they shift the focus to abortion, homosexuality, and all the other social issues.

Democrats and leftists are hostile to America on both topics.

They should NEVER be in power because the result they produce is the destruction of America. Period.

This decision and the Prop 8 ruling have put social conservatism front and center again. This is why Santorum has strengthened. Romney is utterly ill-equipped to compete in this arena.

RETURN of the culture wars?

The war has been one of the culture of death v the culture of LIFE from the get-go. How can there be a *return* of something that has constantly been there?

(God is the source of LIFE.)

The left is like the narcissist or the alcoholic.
They intentionally and continually step over your boundaries,
and when you resist or call them on it,

YOU’RE the bad guy for causing a conflict.

You are correct. Thankfully though, the number of people who are beginning to acquire some authentic wisdom regarding all of this....is growing.

Well, this issue has certainly popped open the eyes of the masses on the right. Southern Baptist pastors are being encouraged to take it to the pulpit and go to jail if necessary.

Not a Jerry Fawell fan, but if he were alive today he would be on a terror to put a stop to this war.

I firmly believe that God is energizing His people. It’s interesting to see the numbers of prayer groups that have sprung up...with more and more people committed to waging *spiritual warfare* ...because our battle is not merely against human flesh (as the Sacred Scriptures tell us). The necessity of unity among Christians is now more important than ever.

Prayer and fasting for our nation really WORKS! :-)

[However, more people are needed to do the same. We have upcoming battles that are going to be quite fierce!]
