Everyone at CPAC says things that conservatives like to hear. That, after all, is the purpose of CPAC. This year, of course, the most important speakers were the presidential candidates. As per the rule, all of them (apart from Ron Paul, who was absent) said things that played well with the audience. Only one, however, said the things that are most needful in this all-important year, and said them with a conviction that one can believe will continue, not only for the remainder of the campaign, but for the remainder of his political career. This was Rick Santorum.
All three men stressed the urgency of defeating President Obama, saving the damaged economy, and repealing Obamacare. The similarities ended there. And as the constitutionalist argument at CPAC is between Santorum and Newt Gingrichfew constitutionalists mistake Mitt Romney for a kindred spirita brief comparison of their respective speeches will be instructive.
Gingrich made some big promises, not just for Day One, as is presidential custom, but even for the weeks prior to his inauguration. My goal, with your help, is that by the time President Obama lands in Chicago [on January 20th], we will have repudiated at least forty percent of his government on the opening day. Okay, that isnt going to happen, but campaign hyperbole is part of the game, right? Fine. The real problem with Gingrichs speech, as with his thinking about goals in general, is that the focus is almost always on government, and how it can bring about the desired resultsthat is, the practical outcomes that collectively spell prosperity.

Working on yanking the Michigan rug out from under Mitt.
FReepmail Antoninus to be added or removed.
Go get ‘em Michigan.
Lame.
I am still trying to figure out what part of Romney is conservative in anyway... lol.
I gave up on CPAC years ago.
Thank the Good Lord for the anti-federalists. Imagine an Obama administration without a Bill of Rights in the US Constitution.
I have no problem with the good things the author said about Santorum’s speech and I have no problem with Santorum’s speech. The author’s breakdown of Newt’s speech was ignorant however.
Ugly.
CPAC was a joke, filled with RomneyBOTS, bought and paid for. Apparently, Santorum did not lay out the right amount of money to take this away from the almighty pocketbook of Romney.
Mr. Newt is till my choice, and will continue to be my choice until he says he quits. Romney will not be our candidate, and neither will Santorum.
Lame is supporting federal mandates with penalties for exercising your natural rights for 20 years and then saying ‘Oops, had that one wrong’.
Too bad Santorum doesn’t have a bloody case! He has NO plans that are unique, bold or in any way different. It’ll be the same generic Republican mediocrity we’ve all come to know and love.
Thanks “conservatives”.
Yeah, Romney’s conservative principles are so sharp he’s “severe.” LOL!
The one thing about Newt, Santorum, or even Ron making gains is that they are saying very conservative things and that has the people’s support. Even with Cain, Palin, Perry and others the message responded to the most and the loudest has been the conservative message. I hope that message is heard loud and clear to every polidiot.
He’s George W. Bush without the like ability and gads, a sweater vest instead of cowboy boots. This will work out just great, won’t it? /s
I guess you missed the point of his speech. You don't win with a bigger bank account (Romney) or empty campaign promises (Newt). You win with the "lofty principles" of conservative ideals our country was founded upon.
Buckwheat is not aware of the Constitution, or the Bill of Rights. So far, none of the judiciary is either.
I have always though he has very presidential hair. He wins the hair category, but for me hair isn't that high on the list, and it is not really a conservative category.
I clicked on the link and the original page is loaded with negative ads from Romney's superPac.
