About time. I've been hoping to see one ever since I started watching the show over ten years ago.

To celebrate I watched that Beanie and Cecil cartoon.

You are so right that there are lots of snotty people at dog shows. I think all they do is fight. Breeders, handlers, owners, it’s war at those dog shows and the only thing that matters is winning. The one thing that p*sses me off the most is judges that almost always pick only dogs that are professionally handled even though that dog is clearly not the best one.

Sure it can work to your benefit if you have a handler and know that judge usually puts up a pro handled dog, but it’s still not fair. Also lots of judges are partial and or friend with certain breeders. They know who the dogs are by who is handling them.

Did you show them yourself or have a handler do it? We just got 3 majors on our boy, so those are out of the way. He needs 3 points to finish. We will show him again this spring in the Florida shows. Not shipping him off again. Hopefully he will snag those 3 points and be done then we will decide if we want to go for his GR CH or special him. My wife and daughter were all into showing them for a while but I think they are getting tired of it now. It’s a hassle.

I missed the first night, but last night I tuned in for a bit. Our youngest basset, just over 2, watched it for quite awhile. Several times he explored the house & yard in search of all of those dogs on the TV. First time I have ever really noticed him paying attention to the TV. True to basset form, he finally dozed off.

My kind of dog. How do you like Bassetts? Do they howl a lot?

I could go on forever about them. We adore them. They see the world through their noses. The female is a barker, and can easily be convinced to howl. She is the least trusting of the bunch, too, having a bit of a rough background. But to her family, she is intensely faithful.

Our favorite activity is to take them hiking. All of the scents in the forest are a treat for them. They are terribly stubborn, and it takes a lot to train them (food). The female is a counter surfer, amazing how far they can reach on a cupboard given their short legs (long bodies).

They are probably the most friendly and least aggressive breed I know. We have incorporated several dogs into the family, including two chihuahuas now, and there has never been a problem with the meet and greet. Once the bassets sniff, they are off on another scent.

Thanks! I’d love to make one our next dog. So far we’ve had a golden, shepherd, malamute and a mutt (dachsund/chow/rottie). He’s hilariously grumpy.

I liked the friendliness of the golden, but he was high maintenance. Bassetts sound my speed, now. I remember a neighbor who had a Beagle, and she was always off chasing rabbits, and howling and barking. That’s the only thing I’m leery of.

Don’t keep a basset alone. They are pack hounds, so they need a companion. Anytime I hear about a bad basset, it has to do with it being kept alone. The first one we picked up had horrific separation anxiety, we got him a pal basset, and it cured it.

That might be the problem with the beagle, the same situation.
