This makes Charlie White look like an alter boy if true. (He is Indiana's Sec. of State that used his ex-wife's home for voting address where he was staying sometimes, nailed last week on several felonies)

The big question will be what Daniels does with this, he's been a long time supporter of Lugar so it could get interesting now that this is all becoming so public right after Charlie's conviction.

An “alter boy” sort of like Chaz Bono?

Why don’t we just defeat Lugar the Loser on the merits? This “residency” crap is getting old. IMO.

Did they nail White on voting or was it illegally collecting his Fisher’s council salary?

Dick should give it up and retire with honors.

He’s far too old to be doing this.

I will give him credit for one thing, though. His re-election commercials are carpet bombing Baraq on the Keystone pipeline issue, and with gasoline set to soar in price, this will be a GREAT issue for Republicans nationwide.

“This “residency” crap is getting old. IMO.”

No, it is not.

It’s fundamental.

BTW, Obama’s true citizenship is just as important.

We're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little more now if we can and the rest next quarter.

The two situations are not similar.

Now, the bad news ~ Lugar is still an Indiana resident. That's the law ~ and the rules of the Senate.

You folks can spend an awful lot of time playing this residence higglypiggly and not get anywhere with it.

What you have to understand is that we've had a Senate and a House for over 200 years. In the earliest days a Congressman might be away at Congress for months and show up "back home" at quite irregular times. Later on when Congress was made a full time job laws were passed to enable them to live near Congress as well as back in their home districts or states.

Let's put it this way, there ways to get at Lugar that are more meaningful. Maybe you ought to check and see why he let them tear down the Hoosier Dome he'd worked so hard to get built ~ now that'd be much more likely to yield some positive benefit to his challengers.

Having previously spent a number of years in the US Army, I always “maintained” a “home of record” in the state I lived in at the time I entered service. So even though I didn’t own a home in that state or live there for over 7 years I continued to vote (and pay state & local taxes) as a resident of that state. I used my parents’ address as my “home” address. This was legal and proper and, in the same way, it is legal and proper for Lugar to maintain his Indiana “residency” while in Congressional service as one of Indiana’s Senators.

But Lugar SHOULD NOT HAVE maintained that his “residence” was the house that he sold to a non relative in the 70s. That is clearly a stupid thing to do. He should use an address with some connection to him — if only a post office box.

I don’t live in Indiana but have contributed to Richard Mourdock’s campaign in the Republican primary and hope that he defeats Lugar. I encourage all Freepers who live in Indiana to support Mourdock however you can. Lugar definitely needs to go. Obama can then pick some other person (hopefully from a non “Red” state) as his favorite Republican.

SlFloFreeper is right ~ now, Fishtank, go check the laws on the matter first. This is a US Senator ~ he works in Washington ~ it's a full time job ~ he's an Indiana resident.

In fact, irrespective of what Indiana does or demands of him to retain his residency, the Commonwealth of Virginia where he has a crash pad WILL NOT EVER CLAIM HIM AS A RESIDENT because their laws forestall the use of time here as a Congressman counting toward time required to become a resident.

Time spent in Congress doesn't count toward creating residency for DC either, or Maryland, or any place else.

Beat the man on the issues!

A Post Office Box does not count as a residence (even in a non city delivery service area). To rent a box you must prove where you live BTW.

Virtually every state has some measure governing residency while in the military. The US Senate has its own rules for its members and in the hierarchy of order, those rules prevail in every case. Only the Senate can remove a member. People who question Lugar's residency need to file an inquiry or a complaint with, among others, the President of the Senate, or the Vice President, or the Majority leader.

I am certain those fine gentlemen will hop on that like a flea on a dog!

Does SoFloFreeper stand for South Florida Freeper?
If so then you should be familiar with Senior wexler who used his in laws address for residency and in fact hadn’t lived or even owned any property in his district for years.’
That and other shenanagans forced him to quit, thankfully
So yes residency can be trifulling it can be effective too.

I think he got it on all counts, but the big one was using his ex’s home as his residence, that was the one that got him in the most trouble I think.

Wexler was the first thing I thought of when I read that article, I know state laws are different but once the media got hold and ran with it he was toast within 6 months.

Hoping that the same thing happens to Lugar, enough to make him retire at least.
