His nickname served Gary Carter well right up to his final days. “The Kid.” Once and always, “The Kid.” As his long-time friend Dave Van Horne says, even when it became clear that Mr. Carter’s battle with a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer was being lost, if a baseball person ran into him, it was the same. Sad news. I enjoyed watching him play. Peace to GC and his family.

I hated everything about that 1986 Mets team.

Well -- almost everything. There was this one guy who just stood out as a class act, an all-time baseball great, and a bundle of energy who stood for everything a sports fan would want to see in his team: enthusiasm and a hard-nosed, never-say-die competitive spirit.

Where have you gone, Gary Carter? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

I always hated Gary Carter no matter where he was playing—until he came to the Giants for a year, and I grew to like him a lot. Changed my whole opinion of him.
