Rick Loses Market Value (If it stops moving, subsidize it?)
The Daily ^ | 2/17/2012 | Dan Hirschhorn

Posted on 02/17/2012 2:50:06 PM PST by JediJones

Rick Santorum is touting his promise to eliminate corporate taxes on manufacturers...[that's] coming under scrutiny from conservatives who are decrying it as thoroughly unconservative.

...[Santorum] added: “We need to have a manufacturing base in this economy. Why? Because of our national security.”

...advocates for other sectors of the economy quietly gripe that they’d be effectively underwriting manufacturing...by paying a higher tax rate...

“Giving a preferential rate is picking winners and losers through the tax code,” said Curtis Dubay, a tax policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation...

“This is not free-market economics, this is trying to tilt the market toward manufacturing, and it will hurt the economy rather than help it, because resources would be artificially diverted from other sectors...”

Kevin Hassett...at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said Santorum’s plan would “create the biggest tax dodge in history,” as businesses raced to redefine themselves as manufacturers.

“How do you define manufacturing?” asked Andy Roth of the conservative Club for Growth. “Do movie studios manufacture films? ...are [book publishers] manufacturing books? Companies are going to game this.”

...Romney has tried to paint Santorum as a big spender and a friend of labor unions from his days as a Pennsylvania senator.

[Santorum] said...“...it’s not like there’s a better way to make things in these other countries. It’s just the cost is higher here because of our tax and regulatory structure.”

But conservatives worry that when Santorum talks about the issue, he sounds a bit too much like President Obama, who has made revitalizing manufacturing a key plank of his economic platform.

“There’s a natural evolution of our economy toward high-intellectual-capital things like software — that’s not manufacturing, and that’s OK,” Hassett said. “To say that trend is something we should reverse through tax policy is just the height of economic illiteracy. It’s inexcusable.”

Gingrich has also spoken about “incentivizing” things like flex fuel vehicles.

We're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little more now if we can and the rest next quarter.

Care to call the owner of this forum clueless? How about accusing him of wanting Newt to destroy American jobs?

Do you have any proof of what you say, to back up your brainless rhetoric? And while you are at it, show this forum where it is that I support Romney.

The hallmark of Santorum supporters on Free Republic is personal attacks on anyone who shines a negative light on Santorum, or who doesn't agree that he is God's gift to the GOP.

It's rampant and virtually unchallenged.

Let Jim Robinson speak for him self on this issue.

Seeing what your rhetoric is and other Newt supporters on this thread we don't need manufacturing jobs ? is that right ?
What's wrong lowering taxes for manufactures and getting rid of regulations to help our manufacturing base recover in this country ?

I’m not one to call the shots here, but this circular firing squad on Santorum has to stop.

If shilling for Romney here is a no-no, then recklessly tearing down Santorum should be a no-no, since it’s essentially the same thing.

That’s not to say that criticism of Santorum shouldn’t be allowed, but some people’s main purpose here is to troll every Santorum thread and bash him at every opportunity.

You need to get treatment for your Newtaphobia. And you either need to go back to school to take Economics 101 or maybe join the OWS crowd to help elect socialists.

Actually the WSJ has been saying that the jobs are already coming back for some time now. I suspect that's one of the reasons Obama has been trying to get out in front of this trend so that he can take credit for it. Wages are increasing in China and the middle class is growing. The irony is many of these corporations have created competitors for themselves because of technology theft and now they're having problems getting their profits out of the country because the Chinese make it difficult.

As I see it, virtually every candidate still standing has voted in favor of or supported subsidies in some form or another.

Absolute nonsense. Attacking socialism and liberal policies are what we should focus on no matter where they come from. Supporting conservatism is what we're about. Hence that is essentially the same as supporting Newt Gingrich and advising against all of Romney's policies and half of Santorum's.

There has been a massive rise in criticism of Newt Gingrich ever since Santorum's surge, which is wrong and essentially the same thing as shilling for Obama.

Well said. Especially with Michigan coming up and Newt is not even playing in Willard the Lib’s home state.

BEAT ROMNEY there and he’s DEEPLY wounded. What say you, Jim? : )
