For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Out of Wedlock
New York Times ^ | February 17, 2012 | JASON DePARLE and SABRINA TAVERNISE

LORAIN, Ohio — It used to be called illegitimacy. Now it is the new normal. After steadily rising for five decades, the share of children born to unmarried women has crossed a threshold: more than half of births to American women under 30 occur outside marriage.

Once largely limited to poor women and minorities, motherhood without marriage has settled deeply into middle America. The fastest growth in the last two decades has occurred among white women in their 20s who have some college education but no four-year degree, according to Child Trends, a Washington research group that analyzed government data.

Among mothers of all ages, a majority — 59 percent in 2009 — are married when they have children. But the surge of births outside marriage among younger women — nearly two-thirds of children in the United States are born to mothers under 30 — is both a symbol of the transforming family and a hint of coming generational change.

One group still largely resists the trend: college graduates, who overwhelmingly marry before having children. That is turning family structure into a new class divide, with the economic and social rewards of marriage increasingly reserved for people with the most education.

“Marriage has become a luxury good,” said Frank Furstenberg, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

The shift is affecting children’s lives. Researchers have consistently found that children born outside marriage face elevated risks of falling into poverty, failing in school or suffering emotional and behavioral problems.

If you want more of something, subsidize it, which is what we do for illegitimate births.

The government of the disUnited States of America has in the past and is in the present chasing the male from the American home in order to make as much of the population as possible dependent on the state for damn near everything from womb to tomb.
This was started in the 1880s with the American Indian and by 1900 the entire (with damn few exceptions) native population was completely at the mercy of the BIA. Just look at them today, Reduced to insufferable poverty, crime, drug & alcohol dependency and despair. With little or no self respect. I weep in shame when I go on any reservation.
Then look at the African American community and what has happened since 1965. Go to any “inner city” and just look around. Damn near the entire population is reduced to poverty, crime, drug & alcohol dependency and despair. With little or no self respect. Again I weep in shame when I go there.
Now it is happening in the Latinos community and is starting to happen in the White community. if we don't do something. As most know Washington DC no longer answers to the people, just to whatever special interest is feathering their nest at the time.
Blaming the American Indian, African American, Latino or any minority for what has happened to them is kinda like blaming Israel for the Arabs killing Jews.

I fail to understand why more people do not understand we have crossed the Rubicon in this country culturally , spiritually, exceptionallism, financially, we cannot go back ....far too many people suck off the government (taxpayer) and aren’t going to be productive ....

We are going to crash....it’s only a matter if we are going down for a soft landing or a B-52 falling from 10,000 ft out of fuel...

Right now we are flying on fumes....

And then, wearing their "single mother" labels like badges of honor and victim-hood, they march down to the welfare office and demand you and I pick up the tab ... forever.
They's gots rights don't you know.

I went to a Father/Daughter dance last night with my 9 year old. The place was packed with fathers, it was fun. I have never understood a mother denying a child a father or the father allowing it to happen. My daughter told me yesterday that a 16 year old wanted to replace me at the dance and my daughter told him that she would never allow that to happen.

That could not have happened in my daughter’s old school last year where the mothers told me that marriage was outdated.

My daughter’s new school is rated 10 out of 10 whereas her old school was rated 6 out of 10.

It is amazing how well a school does when they get away from the Hispanic culture. Don’t shoot me, I said “Hispanic culture” not “Hispanics”.

We need God to intervene.

He will intervene. I hope He answers that pryer, but He may answer it differently than we might expect. I think He will either heal our nation (thus sparing the world) or the we may in fact be seeing the beginning of that which will shortly came to pass. I'm beginning to believe it may very well be the latter. There are so many signs pointing to His imminent return and the end of the age, that my prayers these days turn mainly towards people instead of nations. I pray that God will bring in as many a possible before the door is closed and the Day of Vengeance begins.

Many say, "Oh, every generation has said the same thing." No, it's never looked like it does now: nukes ALMOST in the hands of the crazy Islamists, the potential world-wide spread of viruses with no anti-biotic cure, continuing slaughter of over fifty million unborn, the unchecked increase of the pervasiveness of homosexuality, the continuing effects of massive drug abuse and pornography, the cries from all sectors of society for a one world government to "solve" our problems, America's (& the world's) turn from God's solutions to man's solutions.

I think I hear the Holy Spirit warning, "Don't say 'where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation'" (II Peter 3:4) as they did in the days of Noah (as Peter goes on to describe).

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. (1 Thessalonians 5:4-6). When He comes, may we by God's grace be found watching and ready and occupied in His errands.

Yup. Hard crash coming. Brilliant government plans like "midnight basketball" or a little bit bigger, or a little bit smaller government handout, is not going to bring out any sort of change in society.

The majority in this society need to be taught a very hard lesson. It will be painful, but it is inevitable.

Personally, I think any attempt to soften the landing is verging on unpatritoic. We need bitter medicine, and the sooner the better.

Cut off the benefits for raising bastards. Reform child support laws. Increase the stigma for being a bastard. We made it a badge of honor for a young teenage girl to have kids. She gets all kinds of attention and stuff. Take that away, and things will change. Yes, the kids will be hurt, but less than they arr now.

This pattern continues because we pay to continue it, but it has reached the point where it is probably impossible to stop it. In the short run, it may make some difference who wins our state and national elections. But in the long run, there is no way to maintain a thriving nation when the citizens have been left to rear themselves from infancy onwards. Such people are quite obviously incapable of self-government.

You get what you reward, whether in or out of marriage. And the law overwhelmingly rewards single motherhood.

A male pays for the kid and the woman’s housing, and if not able, the state steps in and does it. The risk of pregnancy has long ago been successfully transferred to the male. Indeed, the woman can live more comfortably without him in most cases.

70% of all divorce is now instigated by women, the most cited reason being, “I don’t love him anymore.” The simple fact is, she gets half of everything and the lion’s share of his income for life if they have children. Any male cavorting with a female, in or out of marriage, is playing with fire without a contract; most single fathers are now living in poverty, and their depression and suicide rates are sky-high.

My humble suggestion for any male is to acquaint themselves with the law, including divorce. It will scare you. If you are engaging in unprotected sex, or marrying without a prenuptial agreement, you are insane.

Yes. I'd say we've already pretty much lost a generation or two for some segments of our society. We need to cut off the flow of bennies and just accept the fact that we will lose another generation as people suffer and fail to understand "Where'd the money go?"

Eventually we will have a responsible generation. But until that happens, we will lose generation after generation -- and our reluctance to impose pain will be the major factor which keeps that painful cycle going.

What an idiot! Plays right into the explanation that I have heard put forth by couples shacking up that they can’t “afford” a wedding yet.

I grew up by two Indian reservations. I have seen what the sick cycle can do to a culture. We (the US government) destroyed them. If a young man or woman leaves the rez, gets a good job or education, they are viewed as a traitor. Same if a young black man or woman leaves the neighborhood.

Being successful is viewed as betraying the race. Those who leave, leave everyone and everything behind. I know some who have, and it is like they are dead back home.

End the ghettos. Treat them like adults, not children. Realize that they will fail, until they choose to succeed.

Not to excuse the 29%, but that’s one gigantic skew.

Just wait a while. In a few years, that number will be much larger.

Honestly, the man can’t afford marriage. The woman has everything to gain from marriage, the man everything to lose. Since we treat women like legal children, they can seize control of a mans assets at will.

There is very little incentive out side of religion for men to marry, and a lot of incentive not to. Women have some incentive (you can get more stuff from a divorce) but if there is another mans child in the picture, the cost of getting married is very high. I work with a gal who has one son from a divorce, and is shacking up with a guy. She would stand to lose a lot of money if they got married.

I have seven kids. With every one, I took a pay cut (they cost money).

Among the recipient class, every kid is a pay raise.

Obviously, this cannot continue.
