When Republican Assemblyman Cameron Smyth decided to leave the Legislature rather than run for the state Senate this year, it virtually guaranteed that Democrats will achieve a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate, changing the Capitol's political dynamics.
Having already won – via a 2010 ballot measure – the right to pass budgets by simple majority votes, Democrats would gain more power in the Senate over other issues, such as taxes.
That would, in turn, isolate Republicans in the Assembly, who are likely to retain more than a third of the lower house's 80 seats this year, and could even gain one or two. They could still block tax increases, constitutional amendments and other measures requiring two-thirds votes.
The die was cast for a Democratic supermajority in the Senate when the state's new independent redistricting commission redrew its 40 districts.

I know it is cool to bash Cali. They deserve it, but to just get rid of Cali out of the United States would do more damage then good. Aren’t they the 10th largest economy in the World?

You really have to wonder if California is on the road to being a failed state? A failed state politically, socially, economically, in education, health care, or any other things you want to measure.
It was interesting that on election night 2010, as the rest of the nation saw a surge of Republicans being elected governors, taking over state legislatures, and taking back Congress in Washington for the Republicans, that California alone experienced an uptick in Democrats being elected to various offices.
If there’s any “good” of all of this, it’s that the failures of California cannot be blamed in any way on Republicans. Democrats control every single statewide elected constitutional office. Democrats control both the state Assembly and state Senate. They can do whatever they want based on their control. So we’ll see the results of what happens in the future, when you have one party Democrat rule of a major American state.

Moonbeam v. Rick Scott, a CEO who never held political office before the governorship. We have a conservative legislature to go along with him. Big changes; no tenure for new teachers, some mandatory online classes for K-12, legislative approval for almost all administrative regulations, tightening up of voter laws, . . . all were last year's accomplishments. I hope you prosper despite your despotic government.
In the early 2000s, California was the fifth world economy. Just goes to show you the value of full Democrat control.
Ya know all the GOP has to do now is figure out a way to permanently lose Florida, then it will never have to worry about presidential primaries again...
