A 34-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday apparently trying to break into a home in rural Johnson County.

A resident in the home on County Road 617 in Alvarado called 911 about 2 a.m. about a possible burglary or suspicious person trying to break in. A visitor was with the resident.

The resident said he ran out of the room to get away and heard gunshots, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

The visitor told deputies that he fired several times as a man tried to enter. The man fled after being shot, and deputies found his body in the front yard.
