US President Barack Obama sent Afghan President Hamid Karzai a letter of apology over the burning of copies of the Koran overseen by a US officer at a US military base, Karzai's office said Thursday.
Obama said the incident was unintentional and pledged a full investigation, the president's office said, as fierce anti-US protests swept the nation in which at least 14 people have died, including two American soldiers.
"I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident," Obama wrote in the letter presented to Karzai by US ambassador Ryan Crocker. "I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies."
"The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible," the letter said.
Karzai told members of parliament that a US officer was responsible for the burning that was done "out of ignorance", his office said.
The incident at the US military base at Bagram north of Kabul sparked three days of fierce anti-US protests in which at least 12 protesters were killed.

The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.
Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.
“The decision was made that it was a ‘force protection’ measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims,” Wright told CNN on Tuesday.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.
The Bibles were written in the languages Pashto and Dari.
Heard that those korans were desicrated anyways, because they were used to pass along messages by enemy combatants in military prison, according to an interview of Andrew McCathary by the local conservative talkradio show host whose name is part of my tagline.
Now if he ordered them to act against their religion and eat bacon he might have something to apologize for... Ahhhh come to think of it he didn’t have any problem ordering catholics and christians to act against their faith in the contraception abortion matter. Did he apologize for that?

Obama has exceeded all of his handlers expectations. Americans really are the biggest fools in history. They can't see that he works for Muslim Terrorists, Obama is obviously a traitor.
I would like to take this opportunity to dispel some myths about the queeran.
For quite a number of years, I have been receiving the queeran from CAIR, simply by sending them an email and asking for it.
Free and postage paid...I have received over ten.
Now, as far as my uses for them...
For one thing, they do not work well as toilet paper.
Too rough and they do not work well in my septic tank. All the other crap in the tank recoils from them, upsetting the compost process..
Starting fires...excellent. It appears that the inflammatory fairy tales on each page contribute to the overall flammability of the paper.
Not only are they good at starting fires, they seem to keep one going very well.
Lining of my tool box...so-so. I have noticed they absorb the fly crap well.
My tools have a tendency to fall out of the box on occasion...I assume to escape the corrosive effects of the written words on the paper.
Target practice...extremely well!
They appear to attract a 30.06 round, as well as a .45 and .357.
Unfortunately, it takes two of them to stop a 5.56 round that has been dipped in bacon fat.
I could go on and on, but I think the point has been made.
We need to stop the senseless destruction for political purposes of the queeran.
It has so many other practical purposes.
One caveat:...It does not soak up urine; human or feline.
I don't know about canine urine...I can't get my dog to piss on it.
Yep ... same situation with these Korans. There were messages left in them that could have brought danger to our troops so in the efforts for safety, they were removed and were to be disposed of. And keep with standards, all trash is to be burned. And our dear leader apologized for it?!
