A Gentle Reproof for Bill O'Reilly (oil prices)
The American Thinker ^ | February 25, 2012 | James G. Wiles

Litigation isn't poker. It's chess. You have to think three or four moves ahead.

Economics is like that, too.

Nothing is ever actually ceteris paribus. All the little economic variables are always moving and changing. The world's largest economy (ours) is all interconnected. Touch one gizmo, and you affect several other gizmos. All the little widgets talk to each other.

It's even more so with our even larger, globalized economy.

[GREAT BIG IMPORTANT SNIP]

Do you have any idea where this leads? There won't be another refinery built in the United States. We will end up importing all our refined products to escape the controls. If the only way U.S. oil companies can reap the world price is to sell overseas, then you'll see this entire industry migrate out of the United States.

And almost all the high-paying jobs will go, too.

In twenty years, the U.S. petroleum industry will have moved overseas, corporate headquarters included, because the U.S. laws and regulations which Bill O'Reilly is suggesting will handicap them vis-à-vis their competitors. Their American shareholders will support these moves. All the high-paying jobs which used to be in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma -- not just the headquarters jobs, but also technical services as well -- will be in Dubai, Singapore, Holland, and all sorts of havens.

Maybe Brazil.

Natural resources is a global industry. The natural resource companies headquartered in the United States don't need to be headquartered in the United States. It's that simple. Controls always have this effect.

Bill O'Reilly is a thinking man, a well-educated man, and a highly intelligent man. Last night's Talking Points Memo was not his best effort.

I'm sure Bill O'Reilly will think this through.

I don’t think 0bama is ignorant on the subject at all. He knows exactly how it works and his actions are deliberate sabotage. 0’Reilly honestly doesn’t get it and he works hard to remain in the dark about it.

Oh, I believe you. 0’Reilly is a working man and he works up a sweat batting facts away from himself like a baseball player batting balls away in a batting cage. He got so mad at Cavuto once for calmly knocking down every fallacy 0’Reilly believes in, with facts and logic, you could just tell that he wanted to punch him out.

O’Reilly has a lot of influence - if the wanted to do something “for the folks” he’d actually get off his high horse and try to find out how economics actually works in the energy sector.

There is the bottom line. He doesn't want to. He wants to pontificate and in his case I think his pontiff-envy is very literal.

For now I’m stickin with ignernt, and ignernce is no excuse. It is kinda like a hate crime, it is still a crime and hate or not doesn’t make a rats bit of difference in my mind at least. Frankly Scarlett when you hang out all day with folks that think (if that is an operative word) like he does, I’m still of a mind to call him ignorant. There really is no proof to the contrary. Seen any school records to substantiate any other judgement?

...but which ever of us is right, doesn’t really matter, I could care less why he is doing what he is doing I just want him to stop, sooner the better. His hide isn’t big enough to pay for his disastrous policies.

The last time I looked, the average rate of return on Major Oil Companies was about 4%.I can see the day coming when we will export all of the crude we produce, and import all of the finished product. No Oil Company in in their right mind would build a new refinery in this country.
