Romney gives Democrats ammunition in Detroit speech, says wife 'drives a couple of Cadillacs'

Mitt Romney spoke to several empty seats Friday in Detroit, in a speech that offered Democrats more fodder for their attacks and failed to deliver the major economic address his campaign promised.

Television cameras showed rows of empty chairs as Romney rehashed many of the policies and quips he’d used in previous speeches, made a few jokes that appeared to fall flat with the audience and said that his wife, Ann, drives “a couple of Cadillacs,” which will likely give Democrats more ammunition for their depiction of him as rich and out of touch.

The former Massachusetts governor also repeated a line that has been the butt of jokes by late-night comedians — that Michigan has good-sized trees.

“This feels good, being back in Michigan,” he said. “The trees are the right height. The streets are just right.”

Romney then listed the various cars he and his wife own.

“I drive a Mustang and Chevy pickup truck,” he said. “Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually. I used to have a Dodge truck, so I used to have all three [Detroit manufacturers] covered.”

Granted, the Cadillac comment was stupid.

But this was said in Michigan, after all. Emphasizing that you drive American-made vehicles is important. Stopping with the reference to pickups would have been fine.

Personally I won't own a foreign car. That was drilled into me growing up in Michigan — it just doesn't make sense to disrespect what was at one time the main industry of the state.

What other people do with their money is their choice. That's my choice.

Romney = Unelectable

Honestly, I don’t see any of the top three candidates standing much of a chance unless something happens between now and election day.

We really need an economic downturn or something similar.

Romney is the John Kerry of the republican party. He cannot connect with voters.

Jobs are terrible, gasoline is skyrocketing, Iran is a baby step away from a nuke, Karzai is applauding the killing of Americans, Obama is trying to run American religion, babies are being killed by the thousands, and our manufacturing base keeps exporting overseas.

What part of that isn’t already bad enough?

Good points but there needs to be candidate willing to say those things out loud. Not just ramble and say nice generalities, like the last election

I really don’t see what is wrong with two caddy’s. First off, he earned them, second, they’re american made. I could see something wrong if he had said his wife had two Ferraris. And the whole deal with the dog, give me a break.

I really think someone is trying to make something out of nothing because they know that Mitt is cleaner than a Boy Scout and they have given up finding anything juicy and this is as good as it gets for the opposition.

Do any of you remember the media rif when GHWBush didn’t know the price of groceries? He was mercilessly attacked.

Romney doesn’t care about the poor, likes to fire people, makes ten thousand dollar bets, thinks 300 grand is chump change, has more expensive cars than the corvette museum, and made millions off of a proven medicare fraud case in one of his companies.

Both of you think Obama’s superPac and Obama’s billion dollar trust fund and Obama’s media can’t find campaign fodder in that to destroy Mittens the same way that Ted Kennedy did?

Romney wants to be the nominee SO he will lose. He loves liberalism.

Interesting you mention Romney being the John Kerry of the GOP: I was just thinking the same myself. The parallels are striking - N-Eastern Liberal; uber-wealthy; blue-blooded Massachusetts country-club ‘establishment’ to the core; history of flip-flopping; unable to make a principled decision on anything without consulting a focus group first. Nothing he really stands for except wealth, privilege, entitlement, and hair-care products. Running with vast Washington establishment backing as the only ‘electable’ choice, against an unpopular incumbent president who should be ‘there for the taking’....

...now I’m trying to recall how that worked out for Kerry?

I don’t see what the bfd over 2 cadillacs is. I’m on the border of the ghetto. there are plenty of 2 cadillac households around here.

Are you saying you don’t understand what tone deaf is, or are you saying that you don’t understand how Obama will play this?

Exactly. The parallels are remarkable. He voted for Obamacare in MA but now is against it. Kerry voted for the war in iraq but then claimed he was against it. One difference: Romney doesn't have the faked half-english accent that Kerry speaks with.
