Romney moves ahead of Santorum in Michigan (PPP- R39- S-37)
PPP ^ | 2-26-12 | PPP

Mitt Romney's taken a small lead over Rick Santorum in PPP's newestMichigan poll. He's at 39% to 37% for Santorum, 13% for Ron Paul, and 9% for Newt Gingrich.

Compared to a week ago Romney's gained 6 points, while Santorum's juststayed in place. Romney will go into election day with a large lead in the bank. Only 16% of Michigan voters say they've already cast their ballots, but Romney has a whooping 62-29 advantage over Santorum with that group. Santorum actually leads Romney 39-34 with those who are planning to cast their votes on Tuesday, but he'd need to win election day voters by even more than that to neutralize the advantage Romney's built up.

The last week of the campaign in Michigan has seen significant damage to Santorum's image with GOP voters in the state. His net favorability has declined 29 points from +44 (67/23) to now only +15 (54/39). Negative attacks on Romney meanwhile have had no negative effect with his favorability steady at +20 (57/37). . One place Santorum may have hurt himself in the last week is an overemphasis on social issues. 69% of voters say they're generally more concerned with economic issues this year to only 17% who pick social issues. And with the overwhelming majority of voters more concerned about the economy, Romney leads Santorum 45-30. Romney's key base of support in Michigan, as it has been many places, is seniors. He has a 50-34 advantage with them and since most of those who have already voted fall into the over 65 category, that's a big part of why he has such a large lead with that group.

“Momentum in Michigan is completely on Mitt Romney’s side,” said Dean Debnam,President of Public Policy Polling. “He’s amassed a large lead with absentee voters and it will take a huge turnout on election day from Santorum voters to overcome that.”

PPP will release final numbers on the Republican Presidential contest in Michigan Monday night. PPP surveyed 421 likely Republican primary voters on February 26th. The margin of error for the survey is +/-4.8%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP

Anyone who said : “ ANYONE BUT ROMNEY “ , now is the time to put actions to your words, not empty rhetoric... now is where the rubber meets the road... time is running out.

This is basically a dead heat. Romney must be in a panic. If he loses his home state, he is severely damaged.

So far, most of the state polls show Santorum remaining even. In some, Romney moves up. In Georgia, Newt moved up and Romney moved down.

PPP clearly needs an editor for its news releases. Wow.

Unfortunately, there is a small movement within the conservatives that want “ anyone but Rick Santorum “ to help give us a Mitt Romney nomination.

It’s not a winner take all state. So Santorum will get delegates even if he doesn’t win. But psychologically, a win for him would be a blow for the Massachusetts liberal.

*sigh* I think the only thing that can save us now is if Gingrich pulls a Perry and drops out at the last minute and gives Santorum a strong endorsement.

If this was a two-way race between Romney & EITHER Rick or Newt, RINO-Rom would have been out by now or by this Wed. for sure. Rick & Newt Keep splitting the vote & Romney keeps wining.

I think it is time to review the delegate count to date.

Caucas state wins yield no delegates to speak of. This thing has been and remains wide open.

Lets panic after Super Tuesday.

Romney would go to the convention no matter what.

That Newt is willing to do the same is a good thing, because truthfully, though I hope Santorum takes Michigan and AZ, I think he has shot himself in the mouth on contraception, rather than sticking to obvious— an assault against the Constitution, and the Freedom of Religion.

If Rick *has* shot his tongue off, then I will be most grateful that the giant of the field has stayed in for the count.

Santorum was all but broke at the border of South Carolina and rumored to be preparing to fold. Did he bow out for Newt?

Newt is neither broke nor folding material, and can count delegates. There is no delegate victory certain for anyone at this early point. Game on.

I’ll take that. The Rasmussen poll the other day had Romney up by 4, so it looks like Santorum has arrested Mitt’s momentum from the debate and is closing the gap. This thing could go either way. Cmon Michigan!! Do the right thing...

I’m betting there’s an enthusiasm gap between Santorum and Romney, in which Santorum has the big advantage. Romney may be up in the polls, but many saying they will vote for Romney may not care enough to even show up to vote.

If you live or know someone who lives in Michigan or Arizona, tell them it is critical to keep this contest going and to vote for Rick Santorum on Tuesday if they haven’t already.

We are in AZ. We will vote for the conservative who is most likely to beat romney in our state. Despite whatever I think, romney must be stopped before we can pick a real candidate to take on obama.

I thought there was a plan by the unions to do what they can to hurt Romney. Since there is no contest on the Democrat side, they may push their members to vote in the Republican primary. As the leading non-Romney candidate, presumably Santorum would get most of those votes.
