Gingrich takes aim at Santorum, sees impossible task in Afghanistan
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | February 27, 2012 | Jeremy Redmon

NASHVILLE – Newt Gingrich went on the offensive against Rick Santorum during a campaign swing through Tennessee Monday, calling him a “big Labor Republican” and predicting his surging opponent’s fortunes will quickly change amid a chaotic race that could remain competitive all the way to the Republican National Convention in August.

Gingrich, who has said he must do well in the Southern states to win the GOP nomination, also predicted he would win the Alabama and Mississippi primaries next month.

Turning to the escalating violence in Afghanistan, the former Georgia congressman said the United States is facing an impossible task there.

“We are not going to fix Afghanistan. It is not possible,” he told a large group of Republicans at an afternoon luncheon here. “These are people who have spent several thousand years hating foreigners. And what we have done by staying is become the new foreigners.

“This is a real problem. And there are some problems where you have to say, ‘You know, you are going to have to figure out how to live your own miserable life… because you clearly don’t want to learn from me how to be unmiserable. And that is what you are going to see happen.”

Splitting the vote has been Romney's plan all along.

Santorum has been the very lucky beneficiary of Romney's scorched earth beginning in Iowa when Newt Gingrich was running away with the nomination, and then again when Newt recovered in South Carolina, Romney went scorched earth in Florida and Santorum benefited again and FWIW, Sanotrum is still riding that lucky wave by winning the beauty contests in Missouri and Minnesota but he did beat Romney and Newt in Colorado.

Romney is the one running on venom and he should drop out so that we can have a real campaign without vicious attacks and big money ruling the day, trying to nominate a pro-abortion, anti-2nd Amendment, liar of a pandering, sleazy liberal.

You are right on both counts. The smoke bombs laid by Rick to obscure and delay inspection of his record has flatly run its course!

None of this escaped Newt and when he calls Rick a “big labor” Republican, he has the goods to back it up.

This a watershed moment for Newt, where he launches a campaign in kind to ALL his opponents, for a great offensive to gain the South.

God be with us. And you, btw. :)

Really frustrating that voters do not think very deeply about the functions of the Presidency.

Newt could solve any problem and prevent others by surrounding himself with a top-notch cabinet - inspired to accomplish only one goal: To Restore America!!!

Voters are lazy and I think they vote "by polls".
They virtually ignore the role of CIC.

Bloody Thursday.

A gift to Santorum, orchestrated by the Establishment machine for Romney. Rick should just say, “thank you”.

Looks like Newt is throwing some jabs today while Rick is under fire for dare trying to embarrass Willard in his own home state. I think though that the union jab will actually help Rick in two states: MICHIGAN and Pennsylvania.

Oh, well...that’s politics. And timing.

His self righteous, ginormous ego won't let him consider such a humble act as a mere “thank you.” It's not in his DNA. My husband, also a devout Catholic, who happens to be a psychiatrist, can't find an ounce of humility, in Santorum and trust me, he's searched. He likens Santorum to an argumentative teenager.

Bingo! Willard the Lib has got to go! And take his sidekick, Uncle Paul with him!

Conservatives mano y mano, Rick versus Newt is what we all want. Period.

“It is about time Newt took the gloves off instead of protecting Santorum to play the odds against Romney.”

I agree. Rick has been getting a free ride. He isnt a formidable candidate, mainly a puffed up “not Romney” with nothing else to run on.

Obama’s union thugs are voting for Santorum in Michigan. Looks like Romney won’t carry Detroit of wherever they live. LOL....

I don’t quite get the connection myself, actually, about the timing either. I do believe there has to be a reason for the timing.

Could it be that Newt got a really giant financial boost, more than we may know, enough to launch a really grand assault on all fronts, at the same time, starting immediately, as he prepares to try to enter the South for the win, which he forthrightly states is necessary for him to succeed.

Maybe his magic time keeper blew the whistle and said, “you have given Rick enough romping room for no return, and the time has come to take him OUT.”

Otherwise, yes, I too am curious about the timing shot in Michigan by Newt. For one thing, the money. Since Newt is not actively contending MI, what is the strategy for the expenditure.

This tells me something IS up with Newtster. We will know more soon. :)

Newt is making Santorum defend two fronts with positions that are diametrically opposed to each other. Santorum can't defend himself in the South without losing ground in Michigan. If he ignores the accusations in the South they gain traction.

Pretty smart if intentional.

Hat tip to your hubby, who should know.

I agree with him entirely. I should know. I raised three sons and they phased through the same thing, but, they were twelve! LOL!

...imagine a Republican convention with Santorum as the nominee and previous speakers like Rubio, Palin, West, etc., and then (yawn) Rick Santorum. The definition of anti-climatic. Rick would have the bases loaded and I'm afraid he'd pop up a bunt for a double play. Hopefully it will be the only man capable of blasting one deep over the wall in center for grand slam: Newt Gingrich!

Now THAT makes some sense to me. Excellent analysis. Did you grow that in a petrie dish in isolation? LOL. Very interesting.

“...bashing Santorum is sad and desperate.”

It’s not bashing when it’s true.

Rick Santorum has a long legislative record supporting labor unions. Pennsylvania is a union state.

Right now Leo Gerard, the communist head of the International Steelworkers (and a top advisor to BHO2), is gathering up labor union support in PA against Santorum. Google: Santorum and Leo Gerard.

This isn’t over until the balloon drop at the convention in Tampa. We’ve a long way to go.

Salute to the good Dr.O!
That sounds a lot better than my "whiny little dweeb" description.

My take is Mitt or Little Ricky, if elected, would be spending lots of time telling us why they can't do what they promised, while Newt, if elected, will fight for all he's worth to get done what he promised.
