Poll shows Gingrich expanding lead in Georgia (NEWT 42, R22, S16)

A new poll shows Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum losing ground in Georgia to Newt Gingrich, even after an extensive visit to the state.

The Landmark/Rosetta Stone poll of 950 likely Republican primary voters was conducted Thursday exclusively for Channel 2 Action News.

The survey showed Newt Gingrich earning 42 percent of the vote, Mitt Romney with 22 percent, Rick Santorum with 16 percent and Ron Paul with 5 percent. Fifteen percent of Georgians remained undecided.

A Landmark/Rosetta Stone poll conducted one week ago had Santorum in second place, but the candidate has lost nearly 10 percent of the vote in that time. Romney edged Santorum in the Michigan and Arizona primaries on Tuesday.

Newt Gingrich's strategy of blanketing Georgia appears to be paying off. Gringrich has widened his lead from 13 percent to 20 percent, in what has become a must-win state.

Still, Channel 2 political analyst Bill Crane expects many of the undecided voters to go to Santorum.

"Roughly two of every three voters are self-identified evangelical. I still predict he'll pick up the majority of the undecided voters which puts him in a race for second place with Governor Romney," Crane told Channel 2's Lori Geary.

Romney and Santorum must earn at least 20 percent of the vote on Super Tuesday to get any delegates.

The poll, with a margin of error of 3 percent, showed the results are very similar among men and women, but the candidates are in a virtual four way tie among voters age 18 to 34.

Crane told Geary the week has gone well for Gingrich in Georgia, but the real question facing the former House speaker is where to campaign next.

Campaign officials told Geary they expect Gingrich to travel to Georgia on Tuesday, then he'll travel to Alabama, Mississippi and Kansas.

Palin does not support Santorum. I would love for her to come out and level him for saying she does.

The tough part about campaigning in 2008 was convincing people that I wasn’t just making up these kind of quotes from Obama, about electricity prices necessarily skyrocketing and so forth. Most people cannot even fathom that anyone in the world thinks the way progressives do. A lot more time needs to be devoted to explaining what the left is and what their agenda is. That’s why Newt can be a great candidate. He understands the left and can explain credibly and convincingly how out-of-touch they are. Santorum understands the left pretty well, but as Rick Tyler said, he can barely speak English. Romney has already said he refuses to to call Obama a socialist. He isn’t even going to try to explain what the left is. He’s just going to try to say he can “run things” better than Obama in a very generic fashion. He’s unilaterally disarming on 90% of his argument against Obama that way and will naturally make it much tougher to win.

Newt is expanding out to other states by going on the offense in the next few days before Super Tuesday in Ohio, Oklahoma, to go along with Tennessee and Georgia.

And to note, JD Hayworth is in Idaho campaigning on behalf of Newt.

Yes, I hear you.

The problem is that, unfortunately today and for the last 30 years, the American people have listened to the wrong people. The leftist congress critters go on TV and say, “well, even if we started drilling now, it wouldn’t make any difference for 10 years(or whatever figure they were spouting at the time). And the media would not challenge them on their assertion, would not check with actual exploration and production people, would not check with market traders to see how a serious energy policy might affect market prices. It is so frustrating, I could just go Galt on them.

He's made this kind of claim before I believe, but he's certainly at it now.

Only Wednesday Santorum was falsely claiming he had OK Sen. Inhofe behind him.

Liar! Liar!

A Romney nomination will be a Disaster. He will be billed as a Robot from Kolab right out of the shute, and then things will really get nasty.

Rick is another disaster waiting to happen. He has already given them an arsenal of material in stupid comments he has made. When he isn’t giving an empty Rah Rah speech, he has a difficult time speaking. That explains a lot about why his supporters have a hard time when asked Why they support him and what his positions are.

Get Rick flustered and defensive and he will self destruct. The real Rick is not the persona he has sold to the rubes.

I understand fully your frustration in campaigning. I think people should have to pass a test to vote.

LOL, we need more options at the pump. Let the liberals who believe it’s better for the environment to have higher gas prices have the option to pay more.

Regular - $2.50
Unleaded - $2.75
Premium - $3.00
Progressive - $9.99

Here’s a sign idea...have a picture of that speckled owl the Dems want to kill in the crosshairs of Obama and say “Give a hoot, vote for Newt!”

You’re Hilarious! For another $ 50.00 liberals can get a tune up and their tires inflated! There will be a $ 75.00 surcharge with each fill up for those who did not vote for Newt Gingrich, to subsidize the difference in cost between $2.50 and $9.99 per gallon.
