Disorganization marring Rick Santorum's campaign

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio (AP) — Almost as soon as Rick Santorum's advisers outlined a new strategy for staying on message after he lost to Mitt Romney in Michigan, it was abandoned, a victim of the disorganization that's marked his campaign and raised questions about his ability to compete against Romney over the long haul.

"They could be much better on discipline," said Republican operative Michael Dennehy, a top aide for Sen. John McCain four years ago. "They've been very open about their change in messaging after Tuesday's election. It lasted about 12 hours."

Romney is almost painfully consistent when pounding his message about jobs and the economy. The Santorum campaign says the former Pennsylvania senator is the lone candidate in the Republican race who has the courage to talk about all the issues — from female contraception to Iran and everything in between.

That's where Santorum stumbled in Michigan. His team blamed unflattering media coverage but conceded that their candidate suffered from the perception that he was off message when he defended polarizing comments questioning the value of higher education, the separation of church and state, and even Satan's influence on America. Eventually Santorum lost the state to Romney by just 3 percentage points.

The change in message was intended in part to contrast Santorum with Romney, who grew up with wealth and privilege as the son of a governor and auto executive. Widely covered by the media, Santorum's remarks that night also helped to humanize a man who has drawn fire for questioning the role of women in the workforce and the military. Polling suggests that Santorum's loss was caused, in part, because Romney fared better with female voters.

-snip-

It was a strategy widely viewed as smart — and it didn't last.

Why, yes! Here's an expert opinion Santorum should listen to - a top aide for the 2008 candidate who lost in a landslide while spouting pointless pap that only highlighted what a traitorous weasel he was. Yes, Rick, listen to him!

Beat me to it.

The political establishment is dissing Santorum and hinting that Romney is far superior. Stop the presses! This is a really shocking development! [/s]

Santorum has about a 50/50 chance in Ohio, but the fact that he lost Michigan while plying dem union votes does not bode well for him.

I think he is weak and duplicitous.

He showed it in Michigan. He had that wrapped up, and then blew it with missteps and a lack of focus.

The answer to all of our economic problems is to throw Barrack Obama out of office and replace him with Newt Gingrich!

The headline and story “meme” is the opinion of the writer, and is not supported by the facts provided in the article.

THe writer seems to be under the mis-illusion that Romney is a great “messenger”, and that talking about more than one thing indicates going “off-message” and is bad.

So he provides a list of things Santorum has spoken about, all great things that illustrate how much better he is for the country than Obama, and the author thinks this is “abandoning a new message”. Because the author thinks you have to keep saying the same inane things over and over.

The author especially thinks it’s a bad idea for Santorum to discuss the importance of two-parent families. Not sure what the author has against two-parent families, which are a major backbone of our society. And it is clear that some of the problems we have are because of the economic disadvantage of single-parent households.

Other things that he faults Santorum for in the article:
- Talking about health savings accounts.
- Attacking Romney for his mis-statements about the Blunt bill
- defending Reagan’s “fight against evil”
- mentioning his coal-mining grandfather

Then the author starts reporting Romney attacks on Santorum’s organization. SO I guess that’s where he’s getting his ideas.

At least Santorum’s campaign isn’t losing state co-chairs to his opponents. :-)

The Newt and Rick show is exactly what Romney has been hoping for. Super Tuesday will be just super for Mittens.

from female contraception to Iran and everything in between.

You can use a partial quote to make fun of something, but when you purposely use a partial quote, modify the ending, and then pretend it actually supports an argument you try to make, you just look stupid.

Speaking of a biased "meme" written in headlines to go along with its biased article from Fishy.

Yes, that one had me scratching my head, until I realised it was a british paper, and understood better that they are just opining that Georgia will be Newt’s last hurrah, so to speak, and not suggesting that a win in Georgia will somehow CAUSE him to lose.

I’ve had enough experience with headlines to know that they often are cute rather than helpful.

It will be interesting to see how the next 3 days play out. Whatever happens, I expect next wednesday to feel a lot different than today does.

Santorum needs to be more worried about losing voters all over the South, and in Ohio. He’s lost momentum, and is rapidly sinking.

I posted this article just for Fishy because of that article. I once told you I would refrain from criticizing Santo on Santo threads, but I couldn't since they criticize Newt. I tried... The Sanbots can sue me. LoL.

Since I've been alive, newspapers have played it fast and loose with their article headlines. It pisses us off when we read their article headlines are misleading. I suppose the news scribblers believe they have poetic licenses to print whatever. So to hook the readers.

Yes, a very fluid election.

Some Southerners would never vote for Santorum, because of being a Northerner, pure and simple , it has nothing to do with the Bible Belt or being Evangelical.
