WASHINGTON (AP) -- Newt Gingrich says he has no doubts that the Republican presidential candidates who fall short of winning the nomination will unite behind the eventual nominee - despite the often tough rhetoric the contenders are throwing at each other during the campaign.

GeeOpie, think again.

We need more Tea on capital hill - enough to scald the feathers off of any party parrot who happens to land in the White Hut; and KEEP ON IMPEACHING their Quisling RAT/RINO arses until we get an American POTUS again.

I hate to even think about it.

I do know that my hatred for Obama is much stronger than my disapproval of Romney.

Not sure what I’d do.

but most will dutifully pull that GOP lever no matter the name next to it.

Dutiful to an establishment? I NEVER do things because others are doing it. Sorry, Romney is NOT getting my vote NO MATTER WHAT!!

The problem I see, is not that the other candidates won’t fall in line and back the nominee, but that the ugly, drawn-out primary might have suppressed voter enthusiasm too much. The potential nominees we have left all have some flaws, but more than that, they all had their image tarnished by the process, so a lot of Republicans just can’t get excited about any of them anymore.

I’ll probably end up voting “anybody-but-Obama”, but the eventual nominee is really going to have to turn on Obama immediately, and hit him on the issues that count if they want the party to get fired up about voting for him.

I agree, it is time to get rid of the Whigs. The problem will be finding the right leaders to get such an effort on a solid foundation. Unfortunately, both Sarah and Newt have pledged to support the GOP, regardless of the nominee.

Even the Conservatives will hold their nose and vote for Mittens

You got any facts to back up that claim? From what I recall, it was not the most Conservative states that flipped to Obama, it was the most moderate ones!

Thank you, Newt, for some common sense words of healing.

House-Senate-Presidency in 2012!

“Obama WILL be impeached if re-elected.”

I just can’t see that happening. Who’s got the stones to do it?

The GOP lap dogs and talking heads will, but not Conservative voters. Don’t believe us? Nominate Romney and see for yourself.

If Obama wasn’t the incumbent Romney would have run as a Dem.

“Even then, I doubt the Gingrich crowd will come in if it’s Santorum.”

I like Gingrich more than Santorum at this point, but I’d vote for either of them over Romney, and I’d rather see either of them in the VP slot rather than Ron or Rand Paul. I think Romney, if he gets the nomination, will pick one of the Pauls as VP in a futile attempt to pull in more moderates. Maybe he is not that stupid, but I wouldn’t put it past him. I think they have actually already made that backroom deal a long time ago, judging by their conduct in the primary.

If he means the “party” then maybe. If he means the people then no if the nominee is Romney or Paul.........

Maybe I could suck it up and vote for Romney, but he won't even recant Romneycare. He won't even say it was wrong on principle. When I think about that, I just think really on a fundamental issue like that he isn't any different than Obama. That thought will cross the minds of a great many voters out there in November, and Romney will lose.

Sorry, no vote for mittens. If that means the US gets another 4 years of barry, then heck, we deserve what we get.

Perhaps we the silent majority “woke up” a little too late.

I don’t like what I believe is coming down the road. A FReeper in another thread said we are already in the 2nd American Civil War....economics and the media.

The next step will be an ugly one....but one we must take.

"So President Ubama would be better than President Myth?"

Surprisingly, yes. At least w/ barry we know what we are fighting. An enemy within our own lines, we do not.

Jeff, I am with you. People have to remember if this is the card we are dealt, we must play the game. Take Romney one step at a time and push, shove him to the right. Obama cannot have 4 more years, the Supreme Court cannot be placed in his hands. Period.

Aren’t you sick of hearing pundits saying that Mittens has to figure out a way to get Conservatives on his side?

Well, this Conservative will never drink the Romney kool-aid and think about the fact that much of his voting base comes from liberal areas of big cities. God help us.

"Hopefully by 2016 there will emerge a real Tea Party candidate in the Republican Party..."

Such person may very well 'emerge', but the GOP establishment will never allow them to win a nomination.

I have no idea of your age, but many of us have been voting long enough to realize that The Party chooses the candidate according to their 'who's next' list, or according to how 'moderate' they might be.

Primary elections are held just to make us think we are electing a nominee. I don't play those reindeer games anymore. If the GOP wants to shove a lousy candidate in our face, shame on them. Total compromise is not an option and is exactly what has gotten us to the ugly place that we find ourselves.

Paul has definitely helped him, but I think Paul is too marginal to bring Romney anything if a Paul were to be put on the ticket. Paul is harvesting a lot of democrat voters that will disappear in the general. The Republican establishment has the open primaries to disable the conservative faction, but they know they are unlikely to get those votes in the general. Romney is the great moderate, they need to get the base back in.
