At the 1964 Worlds Fair in NY City not only were the Black Men Space ships on display (more than 30 years before the movie) but GM has a Car of the Future on Display. GM proposed that cables be imbeded in the Intersate highways and the car would be autodriven. They pictured a family in a car where Dad was reading the newspaper, Mom was knitting and the kids were playing in the back seat.

2025? Why so long?

Because a cable in the ground system looks good on paper but sucks in reality, there’s a reason that even in 1964 cable car rail was in the past. Big maintenance pain, very expensive. And adding the complexity of passenger cars being able to hook and unhook at will just makes everything worse. And trying to do that for interstate distances would just be insane.
