PROFESSOR: Self-Segregation Is What's Keeping African Americans Out Of Silicon Valley

Vivian Giang
March 5, 2012

And it's all because of self-segregation, says Maya Beasley, author of Opting Out: Losing The Potential Of American's Young Black Elite and an assistant professor of sociology and African-American studies at the University of Connecticut.

Beasley, who is bi-racial, noticed the trend as a graduate student at Stanford University in Palo Alto, the heart of Silicon Valley. Beasley told Joseph Walker at the Wall Street Journal's FINS that she witnessed a "fair amount of Asians and South Asians and a lot of white people, but there really weren't any African-Americans. You'd pick up the paper and find out about a new start-up but they were never founded by African-Americans."

Beasley says:

There's a danger in completely segregating yourself. When black students only interact with each other it really inhibits the information they're getting. White students are getting advice from their parents and summer jobs through their connections. If you're limiting the number of times you're spending with white people, you're also limiting the types of information you have available to you.

Black students need to learn to interact with white people and have some amount of comfort with them and I don't think that's asking a lot. I'll say freely that black students face lots and lots of racial antagonism on campus, but that's not the only thing they're going to encounter, and that's not the only type of white person they're going to encounter on or off campus.

Since there is already a lack of African-Americans in the tech sector, it makes others more weary to join. Instead, African-Americans are going into social work, education and government administration in large numbers,

A professional courtesy by declining to identify a public business he claims to be aware of? I don’t think that qualifies as a professional courtesy.

Your smart ass personal attacks can carry on for as long as your wish. I am a man of unlimited patience when dealing with someone such as you. I would think by now you would have the common sense to ask permission, which is an asinine claim, to identify the firm.

Why? Why would I do that? To satisfy you? Who do you think you are? I'm supposed to call up the president of a company I haven't talked to in almost six years to get permission to do what? Tell you his name? You must think I'm as nuts as you.

Honestly, you should be under the care of a minder. You need professional help. You are trapped in fantasy-land. I don't care whether you believe me or not. If you don't believe me, fine. What does it matter?

Personally, I think you have a couple of screws loose.

Probably more due to only 90 black high school seniors in the entire US scored 750 or higher on the math SAT in 1992.

One would infer from your original post that you were on a personal basis with those who head up the enterprise and chose not to mention their name out of respect for that relationship.
If that is not the case, you willfully stated a relationship that did not exist. Therefore, one must question the existence of the firm you alluded to.
Perhaps I should suggest that you don’t lie on Free Republic, if you don’t want to be found out, if in fact the firm does not exist.

One would infer from your original post that you were on a personal basis with those who head up the enterprise and chose not to mention their name out of respect for that relationship.

"One would infer?" Which one? Who, besides yourself, has drawn this inference? By saying "one would infer" you try to make your nonsensical assertion sound like it has weight of the crowd behind it, instead simply the benumbing quack of a solitary intellectual pifflestamp. It would have been more accurate if, instead of the words "One would infer," you had said "An idiot would infer."

If that is not the case, you willfully stated a relationship that did not exist. Therefore, one must question the existence of the firm you alluded to.

I "willfully stated" precisely what I stated. I'm not responsible for what you infer. If you wish to infer that I'm not telling the truth, you are free to do so. I would no more try to dissuade you than I would try to convince a committed believer in onanism that he's in danger of developing an embarrassing hairy palm.

I've always said there's noting more pathetic than a fool who has convinced himself he's smart. You're a pitch-perfect example of that.

If you're really bothered by what I say, why not report me to the Admin Moderator?

Using the term one indicates a single person. There was no assertion to a greater number though there may be.
I believe your personal attacks lessen any level of credence that may be lent to your original posting. Personal attacks demonstrates an inability to communicate in a rational manner and further diminish the level at which one might trust in your declaration.

Bully for you. I believe that you have a personality disorder. My belief has precisely as much weight as yours.

Personal attacks demonstrates an inability to communicate in a rational manner and further diminish the level at which one might trust in your declaration.I was just making a comment here, when you started demanding information from me. In one post you accused me of saying something untrue; something that I know to be true.

I communicated what I wanted to communicate in post #4 on this thread; that communication was clear and informative. Everything I've said to you on this thread has been responsive to your asinine bloviations. You're welcome to your opinion, as a self-appointed critic of my communication skills. Yet here you are, still trying unsuccessfully to score a point. Why?

FR policy, stated right on the posting page, includes the words "no personal attacks." Why don't you report me to the Admin Moderator?

Why don’t I report you? Two reasons motivate me. The first is pity for your inability to engage in a reasonable discussion, and the second is your freedom to blown off your cannon mouth as much as you want.
I’m not offended by what you say, and if I were that isn’t a reason to report a person. Dealing with offense is an adult undertaking that need not be overseen by a governing authority.
As before I seek an answer to a simple question that you ardently refuse to provide if you are in fact able to.

This is such utter crap. Blacks should shout this down, if they knew any better. It just keeps the victimization fires burning for the Left to exploit.

The FACT is that after a half-century of the extreme and intense racial acceptance indoctrination any country on planet Earth has ever seen, Black students are currently enjoying the MOST acceptance they've ever had anywhere.

Is it perfect? Show me anything that is. But it's not just acceptable (let alone bad) - it's extremely GOOD, POSITIVE, SUPPORTIVE and most of all, GENUINE. Most students - and by most, I mean almost ALL - are genuinely colorblind.

So much so that the Leftist universities have resorted to forcing ALL students to take racial degredation classes, to try to abuse the crap out of them so hard with psychological abuse techniques in the name of racial differences, that they CREATE racial anger in students. And yet even then, they virtually always FAIL.

Leftists are lying monsters - and race is one of their most evil and sadistic weapons. Blacks need to turn against the Left is droves and shout them down as the liars they are - and refuse the victimization and lower ability plantation status the damned Left keeps forcing on them.

And I refuse to give you the answer you seek. It appears that gives me power over you. Strange.

I think it proves what you post on FR can’t be believed. One who seeks power over another in such a small circumstance is a pitiable individual indeed. To shatter your delusion, you have no power over me, nor I think over anyone.

And yet here you are once again.

As usual there is some attempt at infantile humor on your part. And again you fail hopelessly.

A sense of humor is useful.

Most nucases lack one, I've noticed. Take yourself, for instance.

I'm sure you've done that before.
