Yesterday Peres Asked, Today Netanyahu To Ask For Pollard Release From Obama

Officials in the Prime Ministers office have relayed to journalists that it is the intention of the Prime Minister to raise with the President, the issue of Jonathan Pollard’s release. As will be remembered, 14 months ago Prime Minister Netanyahu made an unprecedented official request for Pollard’s release. His request has not received the courtesy of a response to date. At this time hopes are mounting that during the upcoming meeting between the PM and the President, a positive response to Netanyahu’s request will be forthcoming. Even more so, in light of the dozens of appeals by high-ranking senior officials to President Obama to release Pollard now and calling his continued incarceration a “travesty of justice”.

Esther Pollard responded by urging the President to respond favorably to the repeated requests for her husband’s release: “Jonathan’s release, Mr. President, will be a real medal of freedom for us and for all of Israel! Please send Jonathan home with Mr. Netanyahu.”

In the meantime President Peres’ office has confirmed that he asked President Obama for the release of Jonathan Pollard during their White House meeting. No further details have been released at this time.

Some folks have a lot of nerve. The problem is, I don't trust Obama to hold firm to principle when votes are involved.

Pollard committed espionage against the U.S. He should stay right where he is in federal prison.

Sometimes I feel like I live in Bizarroland.

The country that shamelessly spied on us asks us publicly to release its spy.

If it were me, I’d put a noose around his neck and hang him, then send him to Israel in a body bag and say that will happen to every other spy that gets caught.

He and his wife should have been shot.

Spying like this, and the way Israel harassed our investigators makes it harder to fend off their detractors.
Not smart for Israel’s long term relationship with the U.S.

When “Allies” stab you in the back it tends to rankle.

And this is not the only incident, I clearly recall their being caught stealing “Cluster Bomb” tech. not that many years ago.

Idiots all around.

1. Israel has limited political capitol. Why waste it on Pollard, when the real issue is protecting America and Israel from a nuclear Iran.
2. Pollard passed information on Iraq's nuclear program to Israel. He placed Israel's survival above his own freedom. How can Netanyahu dishonor him by risking Israel for his release. Logic fail for all of Pollard idiot supporters.
3. The obligation to ransom prisoners does not apply to Pollard. He was not kidnapped. He committed a crime. Logic and Halakha fail for all of Pollard idiot supporters.
4. Bringing up Pollard pisses off American patriots and renews the charge of dual loyalty... What is to be gained?
When Iran is taken care of, Israel should arrest one of the CIA agents aiding the Palestinians in destroying Israel and trade him/her for Pollard. This would also be a warning to the CIA to stop aiding the Palestinians and that blood is on their hands too. Now before some schmuck levels dual-loyalty (or worse) charges against me, think it through. I am calling for an action against CIA aide to Islamist Terrorist, aid that is logically treason in so far as it helps Hamas, the sibling of Al Qaeda.

I think Martin Peretz shares your sentiments of the self-defeating nature of this campaign. Netanyahu, when he is pressing for action against Iran, is doing what he feels he must do to fulfill his obligation to protect his people. But Netanyahu when he wastes his nation's political capital to free Pollard is nothing more than just another politician looking out for project #1-reelection.
