'Brosiery' and 'mantyhose' take off
Daily Mail ^ | 03/07/12

Posted on 03/07/2012 8:50:15 AM PST by AtlasStalled

If you thought men in tights was a sartorial statement best left to medieval jesters, think again.

The underwear staple for women is making its way into wardrobes of the opposite sex - and the look is gaining popularity.

If any were in doubt as to the strength of the trend, it even has its own name: Mantyhose.

I can't be relied on to regularly wear underware. So I'm guessing that I'm not part of the demographic they are marketing to.

Women don’t seem to wear hose at all these days. They just walk around bare-legged, in high heels or flip-flops, all winter long, showing their pale, mosquito-bitten or bruised, blue-veined gams ... for some reason imagining this is “sexy.”

It’s “sexy” like my greyhound lying on her back with all her legs in the air, looking like a dead chicken.

Don't let your greyhound hear you say that! She's just asking for a belly rub.

Women stopped wearing pants? When did that happen? All I ever see is muffin topped blue jeans.

I remember a TV commercial in the 70’s with NY Jets Joe Namath posing in panty hose/tights. I also recall my co-workers and IU laughing about it in the lunchroom and calling them “manny hose”. Close enough...

I specifically came here expecting to see a Namath reference - and I was utterly astonished to realize that I was mistaken. I did enjoy the men in tights reference however.

It's "de ja vue" all over again; this was tried in the 70's - as you say - using Joe Namath as their spokesman. Joe appeared on TV wearing those things. Back then they were "Mannyhose", as opposed to "ManTyhose".

It was a major dud then, and probably will be now, even if we do have more metrosexual candidates in today's society...huh, obama?

I read or heard somewhere that Farve wore hose under his uniform. Now you can get male athletic tights, which are comfortable.

After the article assures us that 'men' are buying the product, they offer this photo. Don't know who they are pitching this to, but I don't think it's the Laz's of this world. He'd hit it, but not while wearing those. At least I hope not.

I know some men who ride horses a lot wear hose under their pants to help prevent chafing etc... But they never let it show and they never ever talk or admit to it.

I can see men wearing hose as a functional garment to do manly activities like riding horses, but as a fashion statement...

Well, I was sworn to secrecy, so I’ll keep details to a minimum here. I do know of certain members of a military honor guard, and some watch standers that resorted to Queen sized panty hose (”Winteralls”) in order to insulate themselves from bitter cold while on duty. Yes. Swear ta’ gawd this predated the advent of modern thermal undwear design...but some seemed to enjoy it waaaay too much.

One night when we were watching TV and the commercial came on, our then-6 year old daughter asked my husband “daddy will you wear that?” Daddy, an engineer said scornfully “no, baby-real daddys don’t wear that.” That is still true...

And let’s not forget the other Carter era stuff we have been forced to re-visit-home thermostasts turned down to freezing and wearing coats in the house because of the cost of electricity, heating oil and propane, eating ground beef as a treat instead of the better cuts of beef, and counting the change from everyone’s pockets to buy an extra gallon of gas-like that worked out so well the first time.

And coming soon, at this rate-the joy and camaraderie of waiting in line at the local gas station, hoping there is still going to be gas left for you to buy...

I wear em under my sweats. Very comfortable and very warm on a cold day while running. Noticed less cramping and leg pains.

Hmmm. Not me. If your thighs and crotch are moving around enough to cause chaffing, you're probably doing something wrong. Stop gripping with your knees, relax your legs and let gravity keep you still.

However, I have worn the ankle high foot things for jogging, or breaking in new boots. They help reduce blisters when shoes are new.

under armour makes compression tights but they are NOT a fashion statement in any way shape or form.

(They are also made for men with actual male genitals)

Their function is recovery.

this “product” is as wrong as lipstick for pigs.

I might be in the minority, but IMO it's just inappropriate and tacky to not wear hose with a dress even if your legs are tanned and perfect. It used to be considered a terribly low-class thing to see a woman with bare legs and dress shoes...it just wasn't done. And please, please don't get me started on those ugly, nasty flip-flops. I hate them. They're fine for the beach, but that's all you see women wear in the summer now.
