One million dollars may be a lot to most people, but apparently it is not enough for lottery winner Amanda Clayton, who is still receiving welfare assistance. The 24-year-old Michigan native won a $1 million state lottery prize in Sept., but has remained on the state's welfare system. Reports show that Clayton receives over $200 per month in food stamps and other state assistance. "I'm still struggling," she told WDIV, the local TV station.
After being tipped off about Clayton's benefits, reporters began following her around and investigating her claim. "I feel that it's okay [to receive welfare] because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay. I have two houses," she told reporters.
This is after the television crew discovered that she had bought a house and car, paying cash for both. The station reported that Clayton received over $500,000 after taking a lump sum payment instead of annual installments.

Give her two years and she will be flat ass broke.
She needed a leg up....into her hammock.
We have to Spread the Wealth and give our Fair Share to the poor woman.
In other news, Georgetown law student says she and other students cannot afford $9/month in contraceptives.
I believe that my state, when you win the lottery. You have to pay all the assistance back that you recieved.
RE: She needed a leg up
That’s what a lot of Georgetown female law students seem to be doing ... only they’re not asking for tax payer help in this area. :)
No matter how much money a fool obtains, the fool will, eventually, lose it all.
Exhibit A: Mike Tyson.
Whatever happened to homeless people? There don’t seek to be any in this recession...
It’s time we personalize government incompetence by taking stories like this, viral.
Let’s beat the Alinskyites at their own game.
“I feel that it’s okay [to receive welfare] because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay. I have two houses,” she told reporters. “
I be ENTITLED, DAMMIT!!
The worst thing you can do, if your income is inadequate, is buy a house if you’ve only won 1 million dollars.
I figure the best way to see what kind of life I could win, is expect myself to live until I’m 90, even though I probably won’t and divide my lottery prize by the years I have left.
In my current situation, I could either add about 20 grand a year to my current income. Not enough to buy a house, but it would give me a better apartment. I’d probably also return to school and stay there until something is achieved, however long it took.
But not enough to own a house.
According to Fluke, one woman:
"told us about how embarrassed and just powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter and learned for the first time that contraception was not covered on her insurance and she had to turn and walk away because she couldnt afford that prescription. Women like her have no choice but to go without contraception. The woman had "no choice but to go without contraception?" Apparently, the women Fluke talked about needed to Google "free birth control pills" and step away from the keyboard. Then she needed to call Planned Parenthood if you wasn't satisfied with her choices. If you didn't like the color and shapes of the free ones, many states offer birth control pills at $9/month. Surely some liberal in Hollywood can pony up $9 a month to keep the First Amendment in place. Or Fluke. Fluke met this woman. Couldn't Fluke and the activist next to her forgo a latte this month? Don't try and tell me that the woman Fluke talked about had "no choice" and we have to abandon the First Amendment rights of religiously-affiliated employers based on this little anecdote.

He's Exhibit A for a lot of things, isn't he?
I can’t afford to pay for this s-it.
I can’t wait until the economy goes completely underground. That will be fun.
You can bet that her babies-daddies will want a cut.
Yes, one of which you bought with your lottery winnings.
I’m glad she’s white so no one can say we are racist. This is typical of the shape Amerika is in today. Even my own mother argues issues I try to talk to her about. The Kommunists have truly taken over the world.
Not in Fl. The lottery doesn’t count as “income”.
This woman is truly poor, but that is not a surprise anymore. The entitlement mentality is very destructive to individuals.
Being broke is a temporary financial situation, being poor is a state of mind!
I feel that its okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay, she added. I have two houses.
Oh the huge manatee .... another welfare entitlement Queen.
He's Exhibit A for a lot of things, isn't he?
He does cry after he has sex. Mace bothers his eyes.
Liberals have no shame.
Thanks.I guess we’ll be on the for her birth control?
She should reimburse the state for the free help given. Then pay taxes on what’s left.
In Canada, it’s not taxed either.
This is why I’m working hard at winning it.
The state should have deducted all the assistance she was previously given from the Lottery check in the first place.
Obviously she was using assistance money to purchase the tickets to begin with.
I think food stamps are income tested only, not asset tested. So she could “invest” in assets and still be on the dole.
Better she purchased a house, rather than blow it on parties.
Better still if she signed up for an annuity of say 40K per year.
It seems that as long as they exist means-tested social service programs should have maximum asset restrictions as well as maximum income restrictions.
(For my own part, if we as a society really want the state to provide income support, we should take Milton Friedman’s advice, shut down all “poverty programs” with their bureaucratic overhead and perverse incentivization of poverty, and pay everyone a stipend, which is then taxable income, and tweak the tax code so everyone is back on the tax rolls. I’d pick the stipend level so that if everyone over 16 years of age in a household held down a half-time minimum wage job the household would just barely top the poverty line.)
I know that used to be the rule in New York. Basically, welfare was like a loan, when your circumstances changed you were supposed to pay it back, which was a strong disincentive to change circumstances.
Words fail. I don’t have the vocabulary to adequately express my discuss and contempt for this women, for the class she represents and for the system that protects and coddles her!
$500,000 not enough to afford a house? Poppycock! In Michigan, she should be able to buy adequate housing for $120,000. Buy three more for the same price. Spend 10k to pay off bills and 10k to buy adequatee transportation. This gives her a monthly income of about $2400/month. Certainly sufficient to pay her monthly bills. This gives her the financial freedom to go to school, get a degree and get a job. With a base income of $2400, the world becomes a much more interesting oyster.
As mentioned in another post, she is just poor, and has no idea of how to use her money for her benefit.
discuss s/b disgust
Too bad the state did not tax her winnings to recoup the amount of total welfare she had already received; and repaid the treasury (and the taxpayers who are supporting her and her ilk)...
A million dollars isn’t what it used to be...
Give a man a fish and feed him for a day...Give a man a welfare check, a 40-oz beer and a crack pipe, and he’ll vote Democrat for life...Wild Bill For America
really? I’m out to get a Powerball!
You can buy the house, but if your overall income is inadequate to keep the house, you will eventually lose the house. That is what I’m saying.
You’re far better off, if it’s only a million dollars, to forego the house until you have a diploma in something marketable and then buy one, if your new income will support your purchase.
You are almost always better off to keep your lifestyle as low-key as reasonably possible regardless of your actual income.
I should also mention that houses in Canada are also much higher than in many places in the States.
In my local market, an average house is now about 400 grand and a townhouse is about 300 grand. That affects what I think I could do.
But one thing I would do is get something marketable that I could run out of my home and maximize those tax deductions like mad.
Yes, big difference in prices. With 3 rentals, one should be able to afford the upkeep and taxes on the 4th house - AND utilities and food.
If I had that kind of base income and no house payment - my options would EXPLODE!
Yep. Lottery winnings aren’t calculated as income.
Actually they are. The large payouts deduct both federal and state taxes from your winnings. Fed has a special category for such winnings. You really didn't think the house would let you get off lightly, did you?
Having two kids that are being raised on welfare insures that you pay for her lack of birth control. Remember, the more babies you have, the more welfare and food stamps you get.
I meant for the welfare office
The government should not be paying everyone a stipend, that is a statist, leftist wet dream.
Imagine Democrats every elections promising to raise the stipend as opposed to the greedy, evil Republicans.
When everyone gets a check from the government, liberty is DEAD
“You are almost always better off to keep your lifestyle as low-key as reasonably possible regardless of your actual income.”
In other words, “Live like now one else so that some day you can LIVE lik no one else!”
hehe, see my tag line....
