Gingrich Adviser: Romney Should Quit Race, Leave It To Conservatives
Newsmax ^ | 3-7-12 | Weil

Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign has an interesting response to a call from the super PAC supporting Rick Santorum for the former House speaker to exit the race. It’s front-runner Mitt Romney who should say sayonara, says Gingrich policy adviser Vince Haley, Politico reports.

The pro-Santorum Red, White and Blue Fund put out a statement Wednesday urging Gingrich to stand aside, so that the former Pennsylvania senator can stand as the former Massachusetts governor’s sole conservative challenger.

Haley, appearing on Geraldo Rivera’s radio program, would have none of it. But his first response was to take on Romney rather than Santorum. “It’s clear that the voters” aren’t coalescing around the front-runner, Haley said.

“I think he [Romney] should bow out of the race so that conservatives can have a debate” about how to confront Obama, he said. “It’s Mitt Romney who’s screwing up this race, and it’s his establishment support” that is keeping him afloat against the electorate’s wishes.

Haley didn’t exactly blow kisses to Santorum either, Politico reports. He said Santorum helped “squander” the balanced federal budget achieved when Gingrich was House speaker. Gingrich tops Santorum in appealing to both the hearts and minds of conservative voters, Haley said.

Hey Rick- you want my vote? Instead, of engaging in tactical politics and negative campaigning on Newt's past marital problems, challenge him to a one-on-one debate in Alabama.

If you can beat Newt in the arena of conservative ideas- I promise- I will switch my support to you.

From Red State.com (Daniel Horowitz)

“Newt put almost all of his time and treasure into winning his home state. He won it. Yay! But he came in third place even in other southern states like Oklahoma and Tennessee. He has been coming in dead last in almost every primary. If he really wants to see Romney defeated, he is clearly not the one with the credible plan to do so. Santorum definitely has a more legitimate narrative”

Newt just gave the best request. Romney dropping out should be priority.

Last I checked, Romney was the leader in delegates. Ask him to drop out? Things could change but as of now
Romney 415
Santorum 176
Gingrich 105
Paul 47

Romney could lose the next few primaries though. Gingrich
staying in the race would benefit Romney, hurt Santorum

I wouldn’t mind Newt and Rick doing a Lincoln-Douglas type. I don’t really like the debates that the networks do, but I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the Newt and Cain Lincoln-Douglas debate. I thought they both came out looking positive. This could only help both of them IMHO. BUT, him calling for Obama to do 7 3-hour Lincoln Douglas debates will NEVER happen. He will be lucky if Obama debates him at all. I know 3 are scheduled but I can see Obama having an international incident 10 minutes before they are to start...

>>STEUBENVILLE, OH — Rick Santorum’s campaign is calling on conservatives to pressure Newt Gingrich to abandon his bid for the White House, a senior adviser told reporters tonight.Senior campaign strategist John Brabender said the key for the campaign going forward will be creating an opportunity to challenge Mitt Romney one-on-one, though Brabender maintained the Santorum campaign would not directly call on Gingrich to drop out of the race.
>>”We’re never going to call on anybody to get out, but what we are calling is on Tea Party supporters and conservatives is to rally behind the only candidate that has demonstrated over and over again that he’s the one who can compete against Mitt Romney,” Brabender said.

>>”The real key right now is, can we get an opportunity to get a one-on-one shot with Mitt Romney,” he said. “What we found is, Gingrich did a nice job in his home state, but I don’t even think he had a second place anywhere else ... It’s time for conservatives to say ‘Look, we’re going to rally behind one candidate, Rick Santorum.”

When Will GOP Leaders Step In And Demand That Everyone Get Out Of Romney’s Way?
Michael Brendan Dougherty

AP
Mitt Romney has won the most states, he has won the most dedicated delegates. He has the most money, and the most professional campaign. He really is the presumptive nominee.
Just look at the delegate math in the remaining states. It is easy to see that for either Gingrich or Santorum to win the necessary 1140 delegates to secure the nomination they would have to absolutely sweep every contest and leave almost no delegates for any of their competitors.
That is impossible.
No one but Mitt Romney can win the nomination outright.
But together Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul can deny Romney the nomination, create havoc at the Republican convention, destroy the party’s chances against Obama by depleting GOP resources, and tear Republicans apart.
When do party leaders like  Mitch McConnell,  John Boehner  and Republican governors step in and put pressure on Gingrich and Santorum to “do what’s best for the party,” and gracefully bow out? When do they feed media outlets the argument that the ongoing and futile campaigns of Santorum and Gingrich are doing irreparable damage not just to the nominee but to the GOP brand?
Our bet is that this starts very soon.

Gotta love the Gingrich chutzpah.

I don't care if Newt and Santorum play rock/scissors/paper to see who becomes the Prez and Vice Prez nominee. I know our republic cannot stand either another Obama term nor a placeholder, go along pubbie like Romney.

cc,

I’d have more respect for Santorum if he had demanded that Romney drop out instead of going after the only other conservative in the race.

Only one issue in the votes that are LOCKED in. Newt barely comes in 2nd. Because how the RNC awards states that PICK the winner with extra votes, All those Non Binding will go for Mittens. Sorry Newt you and Santorum want be getting them Cause we wont to sit at the Winners table and get extra delegates in four years.

The same can be said for Gingrich and his repeated requests that Santorum drop out.

Sfish, you’re informed by Red State???? -:)

Want my support- encourage Rick to challenge Newt to a one-on-one debate— Rick wins in the arena of ideas- he has my support.

Santorum's afraid to debate anyone one-on-one.

Romney's been running since 2007, enjoys a vast fundraising advantage and still can't seal the deal. That said, it's highly unlikely he won't be the nominee if it isn't a brokered convention.

Are we being set up for a Romney/Santorum ticket? I hope not! It's nothing short of disastrous.
