Santorum Will Not Pressure Gingrich to Drop His Campaign
NYT ^ | 3-7-12 | Oppel

Rick Santorum said on Wednesday that he did not support efforts to pressure Newt Gingrich to get out of the presidential race.

“If someone from my campaign is putting out that message they’re — you’re either misinterpreting it or it’s certainly not coming from me, and I don’t support it,” Mr. Santorum said in brief comments to reporters on Wednesday after a campaign appearance here outside of Kansas City, Kan.

If anyone connected with the campaign is trying to get people to pressure Mr. Gingrich to drop out, he said, “they’re not doing so with my knowledge.”

But Mr. Santorum said he would not be upset if Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker, did quit.

“I’m not saying I don’t want him to get out,” Mr. Santorum said of Mr. Gingrich. “If he wants to get out, I’m all for him getting out,” adding that he would also support the exit of Mitt Romney.

“I wish President Obama would just hand me the thing,” he said. “But that’s not going to happen.”

He also said, “People should stay in the race as long as they feel they should stay in the race.”

Some of Mr. Santorum’s supporters on Wednesday called for Mr. Gingrich to quit.

After Sarah's "boo-hoo" comment and Romney's demand that Rick drop out for the good of the GOP, Rick has apparently backed off his position.

Demands should be made of sterner stuff.

And when Newt asked Santorum to get out that was statesmanship , right?

You did notice that aside from Georgia, Newts showing last night was dismal, didn't you?

Val,

I believe the whole thing was BS. Rick would not demand Newt to drop out. It was a lower staffer who is probably fired for speaking out of line today. Sarah Palin’s comments were during the time Santorum was speaking so there is NO WAY he hear Palin’s comments. I never heard idiot boy Romney say anything to Rick nor do I want too.

I support Newt. I was unhappy when he went to Ohio, and didn’t campaign in Okla and Tenn. I think he could have won at least 1 of those states.

But, from what I can see, he didn’t care. He just wanted to win Georgia- which would then allow him to campaign in Ala and Miss- and if he wins— La and texas.

Thus, for him, he accomplished his purpose. Dismal for you; unhappy for me; but, he obviously has his own agenda.

Of note, I read a piece in the WashPo last night- This “wiseguy” wrote that the only one who was sincerely happy last night was Gingrich-— which therefore (the writer said) — made everyone else unhappy.

It appears that’s so— he’s going about his business.

Me too. I admire him more everyday for his hard work and old-fashioned ethics. I also thoroughly respect his handling of campaign funds. He's thrifty even when he doesn't have to be so much. Would love to see that carry to D.C.

BTW, Santorum should not pressure Newt to drop out, it shows a disrespect for the voters.

>>He just wanted to win Georgia- which would then allow him to campaign in Ala and Miss- and if he wins— La and Texas.<<

That’s apparently his strategy. I suspect Super Tuesday’s results are going to make winning AL and MS tougher for Gingrich though. Santorum seems to be doing pretty well in the South himself. And Missouri caucuses next Thursday, so by next Friday we should have a pretty decent idea whether Gingrich has any hope of yet another comeback.

At least it should be hard for Romney to win either of those states, even if Santorum and Gingrich do keep splitting the conservative vote. Anyone seen a poll on either state yet?

You’re a bit naive. imho

Ricky wants Newts delegates on the second ballot and doesn’t want to antagonize them.

Self-intrest is keeping him on his best behavior.

I’m sure you’re correct, though my comment of support was directed more at the silly put down in post #1.
