Occupy Lubbock to be displaced by Parks Dept.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Occupy Lubbock will be forced to leave next month due to City of Lubbock maintenance.

Protesters have occupied the area on 19th Street and University for nearly six months. They started by holding signs on the corner of the street. Now they have several tents where they sleep and organize protests. They say they are protesting against the one percent of people that control the majority of our country's wealth.

The group chose their location because it was city property, not a park. Therefore, they were allowed to stay under the condition they would not vandalize the area.

Well now spring is around the corner and the city says they can't maintain the property with tents and signs in the area.

Maintenance work began Wednesday as the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation department laid down Moloch. Turns out the city will put down fertilizer April 1st, depending on the weather, according to the City Parks and Recreation Director Randy Truesdell. That means Occupy Lubbock can no longer stay.

"We are a movement. They can't stop that," said Protester Xavyr Herrera.

Herrera says they had a heads up about being removed. A man claiming to be a city official, he says, told them Sunday.

"He said they might start construction. So we didn't know if that would mean we would have to leave because of construction permits," said Herrera.

At this point Truesdell says the city does not have a timeline, but he says they will notify protesters two weeks in advance.

Herrera says when that happens they will take their protesting to the Internet and find a new place to occupy.

"As long as we have an area that has high traffic that we can stay at without getting in trouble then we are fine," said Herrera.

As for Occupy Lubbock coming back to the property, Truesdell says as long as they are doing maintenance it is not allowed.

I don’t know why, but something about the name ‘Occupy Lubbock’ is hilarious.

Time to remove the excrement. Along with the fecal matter they might leave.

Nope, these idiots are “Occupying” a lot near campus. They wanted to set-up on campus, but TTU PD told them that they cannot set up a campsite on campus.

Well, those of us who have been following the story locally can tell you that it has been rather amusing. Let’s see, someone stole their generator, they got into a scuffle with some dudes in a big ol’ pick-up, etc.

I was picturing the convenience store, bank and motel on other corners - so are they on another lot?

So, the local law enforcement agencies know where to drop off all of the gang members.....drugs and food available.

something about the name ‘Occupy Lubbock’ is hilarious.

It's because of how remote it is. And how friggin' bad it smells of sulfer. Granted, this is Texas, and we should sometimes get a whiff of hades....

Lubbock, if you have to go through it, plan your trip so that you can get ripped off in Hobbs, NM, instead.

And special bonus, when you cross the NM line, you can open carry. Which you will need at the border restrooms.

I love this part of the country. No one screws with you because it's already harsh.

Well, they were in a lot in the SW corner of the intersection of University and 19th Street.

Haven’t these stupid, maggot-infested hippies heard that Obama has “saved” the economy??

Time to get a job, deadbeat losers!

Well, “Occupy Lubbock” consists of about a half dozen or so Commie weenies and, I dare think, a few homeless people.

Hat tip and little bow... Nothing personal and no offense intended on my Ft. Worth perspective of Lubbock.

Obviously on my trips through back in the '80s and last year, I didn't meet the right folks.

Or have the right gas mask.

Ft. Worth may be famous for the Stock Yards, but all we have there now is bars and stores. The smell is gone. ;)

I laughed aloud when I read about these idiots complaining that someone stole their generator (the generator was donated, by the way). Wasn’t their generator “just lining the pockets of Big Oil?” ;-)

When driving from Dallas-Fort Worth to New Mexico or Colorado, an amazing number of drivers have pulled off to the side of the road somewhere short of Brownfield or Muleshoe...and shot themselves.

LOL. No worries. We do not smell the stockyards outside of town 99% of the time, but when the wind comes from the southeast, grab a gas mask. ;-)

Spend some more time here next time and you’ll meet the kind of folks you didn’t know still existed in the USSA.

Currently, we are more likely to smell the sweet, sweet smell that comes from pumpjacks.
