Let me suggest an amazing book by Gary Tabues, who now writes for "Reason" but did write for "Science": "Good Calories, Bad Calories." He shows that it's one thing to have a "study," but if it's not double-blind/control group/peer reviewed, it is not likely to be worth anything. Merely "observing" groups and reporting that as science doesn't mean squat. Anyway, Taubes shows that it's carbs, carbs, carbs that are the threat, not meat, not butter, and not even cholesterol.

I deal with this in my book "Seven Events that Made America America" and look at how the fat/cholesterol/meat explanation soon became the villain in the whole obesity debate. It was political from the get-go.

I haven’t read “Good Calories Bad Calories” yet but I have read Taubes’ “Why We Get Fat”, which is, for lack of a better term a more ‘user friendly’ version. GCBC is definitely on my list though.

I’ve cut out carbs (grains specifically) and vegetable oil and eat mainly meat, eggs and butter now. 90 pounds lost so far but I’d like to lose maybe 30 to 40 pounds more.
