Newt hammers Santorum with Romney's attacks

So much for conservatives uniting ahead of Alabama and Mississippi.

Newt Gingrich's team just came out with what I believe is its first sharp hit against Rick Santorum of the campaign, a video montage of the former Pennsylvania senator talking earmarks, endorsing Mitt Romney in the 2008 presidential race and taking "one for the team," as he memorably put it in the final GOP debate in Arizona last month.

If the lines of attack seem familiar, it's because Team Romney - the campaign Gingrich has said he wants to thwart - has been using them against Santorum for weeks.

It's Gingrich's last stand at wooing conservative Southern voters to his side ahead of the Alabama and Mississippi primaries next week, contests that his aide RC Hammond said yesterday he needs to fare well in to justify moving on.

And while there have been some indications of a campaign in the last stages in Newtworld, it doesn't seem that the end will come before Tuesday. The only question is how much damage Santorum incurs in the process.

Selective blindness is unbecoming. A lying attack is a lying attack and I don’t care where it comes from. And santorum piled on Gingrich when there was NO NEED for him to. AND he did it on a debate stage out of left field. Even after that, Newt has refrained from attacking santorum until now. And you don’t approve? Like Sarah said. Boo effing hoo.
Is HE lying about santorum like santorum did about him? No. He could say much worse and I know it because I worked for santorum. So take your holier than thou and give it a rest.

FLASHBACK- JANUARY 31, 2012– BACKGROUND: NEWT Lost FLA- but still leading nationally

Only because they hadn't posted the polls covering January 31st yet:

RCP Poll Average, 1/27/2012: Gingrich 31, Romney 27

RCP Poll Average, 2/3/2012: Romney 29.6, Gingrich 26.8

But if you want to pretend that a small ad buy for Colorado and Nevada (two states Gingrich dismissed as being ones nobody cared about), go right ahead.

Gingrich was collapsing in the polls before Florida. Most conservatives saw that, and those who were more interested in conservatives winning than Newt surviving knew we needed a different candidate for February.

By 2/7, Gingrich had collapsed so thoroughly that he came in 4th in Minnesota, and 3rd in Colorado.

By January 31st, Newt had lost Iowa, New Hampshire, and Florida, and soon Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona, and Maine. Did he bow out? Of course not.

It would certainly have been better if Newt hadn't managed to be found on tape supporting so many unfavorable positions. But that's what we were left with by the time the primaries actually started.

“Oh, boo-hoo”

“Asked about Rick Santorum’s contention that Gingrich is dividing the conservative, anti-Romney vote, Palin dismissed the complaint. “Oh, boo-hoo,” she said.”

“Oh, boo-hoo” “Oh, boo-hoo” “Oh, boo-hoo” “Oh, boo-hoo”

None of the Santorum supporters have acted “holier-than-though”. If anyone has elevated a candidate to Jesus-like status, it’s you Newtbots.

Let’s cut the crap with this “lying” BS. Santorum RIGHTFULLY pointed out that BOTH Romney and Newt supported TARP, Climate Change, and the Individual Mandate. It’s a FACT. Santorum brought it up in a closing remark at one of the FL debates to REMIND people that a CLEAR CONTRAST needs to be defined between the eventual GOP nominee and OBAMA. And he is RIGHT and was TECHNICALLY CORRECT with his statement. Just like Michele Bachmann was correct when she outed Newt as a Big Tent Republican.

Oh, and around that time, Newt was referring to Santorum as a “lightweight” who was “in over his head”, so cut the refraining from attacking Rick” bullcrap

And unless you can provide some actual proof, I highly doubt you have any serious connections to Santorum or have ever met the man.

Gingrich ran Robocalls against Santorum in Georgia. So this isn’t his first attack.

And Santorum spoke against Newt back in the middle of January. His ads in February weren’t his first attack on Gingrich.

I can’t fathom why people think candidates shouldn’t attack each other on their respective records. Santorum did some dumb things, and Gingrich wants to win, so he’s going to point them out. Santorum wanted to beat Romney, so he did what he thought was best, which was to try to take Newt’s place as the conservative alternative.

It’s up to the voters to do the game-playing, not the candidates. We are the ones who should vote smart. We shouldn’t expect the candidates to try to lose elections. The candidates certainly won’t take that advice. If a candidate skips a state, it’s because they know they can’t win, not because they are “trying to give the other guy a chance”.

You might not have noticed...but I did not attack santorum. Save the whine. It goes great with cheese.
As for the rest, you know what assume means?
I did not attack you personally. Didn’t call you a liar. But you have seen fit to do both to me. See ya.

What’s your point?

The objection by some was that Newt had gone negative- and the reply was that Rick went first- as documented.

Yep, and Gingrich and Sharpton are buds.

If you're looking for perfection this year, it ain't happening.

Newt has to know that attacking Santorum is only going to help Romney. Don’t know what your guy has up his sleeve but it’s nothing good for our “beloved republic”. He’s helping Romney, enough said.

CharlesWayne, I missed them thar robocalls. And I DON’T expect candidates to refrain from bringing another candidate’s record into play. You play the hand you’re dealt.

I’m not looking for a perfect candidate, just one who will try to change the inside the DC beltway government and culture. That man is Newt Gingrich.

Beating Obama is what will help our republic....Santorum wouldn’t and Newt has the best chance.

Why would Newt have the best chance of beating Obama? In that one debate (FL I think) where Romney came after Newt, Newt crumbled. Obama’s going to have a lot more “past ghosts” to throw at Newt than Romney. And Newt was furious when the negative false advertising cost him IA but that was baby doo doo next to what O’s gonna toss out there.

We’ll see but so far Rick has taken much more fire from all sides and survived. Right now all three are running campaigns against him, Romney, Paul, and Newt. If he can survive that then I’d say he has a very good shot at surviving Obama. If not, then the bad guys win again, no real surprise there anymore.

Did Newt endorse McCain??? If he didn’t endorse Romney in 2008, he helped give the nomination to McCain. Gee Thanks. I think Romney could have beaten O’Bummer in 08 and we wouldn’t be scared to death of what is now happening to our country.

Not quite enough.

Romney, as lousy as he is, would be a better president than Wittle Wicky (never run so much as a lemonade stand) Santorum.
