It’s not convoluted at all. If the goal is to defeat Romney why is Rick attacking Newt leading up to Alabama and Mississippi where Newt cabn do real damage to Romney. Rick is in third in both states. Why won’t he step aside like Newt has done in state after state? Maybe the goal is not to defeat Romney at all.....hmmmmmm.

You cannot run a “southern strategy” plan in a national campaign. He did little in MN, MO, CO, WA, MI, OH except to siphon off crucial votes allowing Romney to make squeaker wins in these states. Gingrich got only 7% of the vote in MI and allowed Romney to barely hold onto his state with a 3% margin. Had Romney lost MI, this game would have been all over and at most it would have been a Santorum v. Gingrich match. Just listed to the conservative political commentariat, and Gingrich is spoken off only in terms of being a “spoiler” and foil for Romney. This is what conservative members of Fox Panel are saying in Judge Jeanine to the Laura Ingraham show as well as others. Tune into the Mark Levin show on Monday.

Romney doesn't need the south now. He just needs it not to stay home in November. Now he needs to keep the not-Mitt vote split. Newt has proven he can't win anywhere outside the south, he just fights Paul for distant thirds. He's just not nominatable. Romney, alas, is and so can be Rick if Newt would get out. Rick has won in multiple regions, including the south. He'd have won even more states had a couple handful of Newt supporters been less stubborn. He may or may not be the first choice of southerners, but he's a good enough choice that they won't say home on him. Too many of the base would stay home with Mitt and let Obama win.
