“John Carter,” a big-budget science fiction epic from Walt Disney Studios that opened Friday and flopped over the weekend. Disney spent lavishly (some say foolishly) on the movie in large part to keep one of its most important creative talents happy: Andrew Stanton, the Pixar-based director of “Finding Nemo” and “Wall-E.”
“John Carter,” which cost an estimated $350 million to make and market, and was directed by Mr. Stanton, took in about $30.6 million at the North American box office, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. That result is so poor, even when factoring in about $71 million in overseas ticket sales, that analysts estimate that Disney will be forced to take a quarterly write-down of $100 million to $165 million.

I saw how bad things can get when I watched a made for TV movie of the same name on SY FY this morning. It starred an aging Traci Lords and an actor I recognize but could never name.
The chick that’s in it, Lynn Collins, is hot!
Traci Lords? REALLY? I gotta IMDB that.
It’s sad cause these are great stories, not like the crap they put out today. I read were the critics that liked it said it was nostalgic for the old hollywood adventure movies.
I would rather watch gunga din than any matt damon adventure movie.
The only porn queen I know of to ever have moderate success in Hollywood. She used to Co star on the “Dark Skies” series.
Digitization should be reducing the costs of movies not increasing it!!!!!

I met her at a Dragoncon some years back we got an autograph for this old guy I worked with. It made his month.
She was actually rather personable which I wasn’t exactly expecting.
I loved the John Carter series, but I was a bit disappointed when they cast a man-child type in the Carter role. Should be a craggy, get-things-done kid of actor. So, I probably won’t go see the movie. Having read the books, I realize I am in the minority, but still, there was a reason the books were popular.
I’ve seen the ads all over the place. John Carter? I thought it was about a detective or something.
You obviously don’t grasp the man hours that go into every frame of cgi. I can’t fathom how it could possibly be cheaper.

Never read them as a kid, but recently started and am enjoying them. I don’t see why Hollywood would want to use John Carter. He is a man who puruses liberty and accepts responsiblity for his actions. Totally foreign concepts in today’s America, especially in wussified Hollywood.
That would be Antonio Sabato Jr.. I’ve seen this version. It was pretty bad.
There were people who liked the John Carter books...and I don’t have an issue with them (hell, I used to read the Robert E Howard, Conan books) but the comic book sales from when John Carter was a (Marvell?) series should have been enough to tell anyone that this movie was going to flat-out flop.
Generally speaking, this film has no audience. It’s not scifi, it’s not fantasy, it’s sort of adventure.
Doomed from the start.
Anytime I see “SciFi Original” I look elsewhere. They are the worst. And I love science fiction.
