"My parents quiz me. I read lists and I have a really good memory," Madison, who is home-schooled, told Fox's WTTG-TV, a Washington-area station.

She sounds more articulate than most college students...

The idiot reporter on FOX this morning asked her if she “gets out” to play with other children.

The old 'socialization' argument rears its ugly head. I didn't like playing with other kids when I was younger...most were morons. Most still are...

I wonder now about kids who are exposed to so much internet lingo. And I’m certainly guilty of using the abbreviated forms myself. But if you learn to spell from internet forums and chat and such, you are doomed, I think. Plus the English language has taken a nosedive in general.

Probably true. If I were a parent, I would insist on proper spelling and grammar for written work and let the kids talk slang on the phone. I think they could handle that -- sort of like switching to another language.

Maybe, I don’t even know about that. I have noticed (for instance) that “ain’t” has become acceptable even in commentators discussions on tv. I think you speak what you hear and if you hear bad grammar often, that’s how you speak. Does it matter? I think it does, but maybe I’m wrong. I suspect it can impact your ability to get certain jobs. They aren’t going to tell you they aren’t hiring you because of it, probably.
As time goes on what is considered bad grammar will probably change, but it may matter in the short run. For instance, if I were hiring someone, it would matter to me. I doubt I am alone in that.

Does it matter?

Oh! You are corresponding with one of FR's charter grammar and spelling nazis (small "n".) Yes. It matters and, irresistibly, the language is changing. I'm fully in favor of resisting that irresistibility.

My point in the previous comment was only that a child, well-schooled in good language, could indulge in bad language from time to time so long as he knew the difference.

On the other hand, language that my parents and grandparents considered vulgar seems perfectly fine to me as I grew up with it (I'm 58.) Language does change over generations and the best we can do, I think, is to, as Buckley said, stand athwart history yelling, "No!"

I’m getting hoarse. Of course, I might be becoming a curmudgeon. I don’t even like yummy or veggie... ;)
