Analysis: Romney losses show disgruntled GOP base

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney's losses in Alabama and Mississippi underscore a stark reality: The core of his party does not want him.

And that lingering conservative dissatisfaction — on display Tuesday night — threatens to follow Romney into a general election matchup against a Democratic president whose ability to inspire his base is not in question.

Romney's huge lead in the race for delegates to this summer's GOP nominating convention seemed forgotten for a night as Rick Santorum reveled in twin victories handed to him by conservatives and evangelicals who dominate the Republican electorate in the party's only remaining regional stronghold — the South.

Santorum's success and Romney's failure exposed deep divisions within a party torn between a conservative base that's looking for a candidate who is pure on GOP orthodoxy and the rest of the party, which is looking for a nominee able to beat President Barack Obama. Tuesday's outcomes also virtually ensure the increasingly nasty slog toward the Republican presidential nomination will consume even more of Romney's time, energy and money when he'd rather be focused solely on the general election, and Obama.

2, 3, 5 & 6 are redundant, aren’t they?

Im sure thats some of it. However, the majority, I think, are mainstream republicans and ‘independents’. Those who couldn’t think critically if lead by the nose. They show up here all the time. BTW they’ll tell you they’re way smarted than most and regal you w/ their astounding Why Mitt Makes Sense ‘logic’. Stay tuned...

An Internet friend responded to my recent email re. Romney’s past tilts to portside by observing that we have no choice but to support him if he is the nominee. While I want Obozo to go away ASAP, as of this writing, it’s not looking all that good.
My somewhat expanded reply follows.
The Obama smear machine will tear Romney to shreds. Here’s the narrative:
MR’s past and current positions are similar/identical to mine. You gonna vote for a rich, white pubbie over the first black president? A rich, white pubbie who was born with a mouth full of silver spoons who makes snap bets for 10K on TV and tells unemployed workers that his wife drives “...several Cadillacs...”? You gonna vote to send me away after I hiked your welfare benes? (Almost 50% of Americans are receiving those benes.) And the Dem’s will make sure ALL those supporters will get to the polls and, along with millions of illegals and the departed, vote early and often. (It’s the Chicago Way.)
And because the choice is between Obozo and Obozo Lite, a lot of the less committed and uninformed otherwise conservative voters may sit it out.
We need a clear CHOICE. We don’t need the establishment GOP favorite shoved down our throats by the same Beltway jerks who, according to Palin, REFUSED to allow her to expose Obozo’s marxist past in ‘08. That situation is but more evidence of the truth of some gallows humor popular with fellow cynics that the Dems want socialism NOW while the pubbies are content to wait a few days. The bad news from ‘08 is that the GOP establishment has become impatient.
With the MSM covering for Obozo again and the bulk of the electorate either ignorant of or supporting the dismantling of this nation, we’ve got trouble right here in River City.
I’m not sure this fight can be won — or even worth the effort. It now seems that fight will almost certainly move to a new and more “kinetic” level. This WILL get ugly.
All that said, I and many of those I know will NOT allow these treasonous criminals to steal the birthright so many others died to defend.
I guess we’ll see you at the polls. If that fails, it’s on to the barricades (figurative or literal) to carry on the fight the other side started.

Also keep in mind he's getting 98% of the Mormon vote and they turn out in huge numbers. 25% of the voters in Nevada were Mormon but they're only 7% of the population.

Even 50% in the exit poll yesterday said they thought he was the most likely to be Obama. Thankfully a lot of those stood on principle and voted "no" anyway.

GOP wouldn’t have these problems if they would quit promising and pushing the next big RINO as frontrunner.

If we wanted a democrat, we would vote for one that at least admits he is a democrat.

They can’t win without conservatives.

Either they get a clue or they will be out to pasture.

If Romney wins, how are we supposed to oppose him? What if his “version” of Republicanism is popular? He’ll be delivering it for 8 years, Christie for another 8, and by that time conservatives will be more marginalized than they are in most Western European countries. At least if Obama’s reelected we can motivate the base to pack the Congress in 2014 and try again for the Presidency in 4 years.

The real news was that the "core" of Gingrich supporters didn't want newt, they voted for Santorum.

Romney still picked up delegates. If Gingrich would actually stop splitting the conservative vote, Santorum would decisively beat Romney.

You are exactly correct. I’d vote for Obama over Romney. I want my enemies in front and not beside me where they can easily stick a knife in your back.

Newt OR Santorum would beat Willard in any state, other than Mass, if they were running alone against him.

He’s the weakest GOP candidate in the last 100 years.

Santorum beat Newt in Miss and Alabama because Faux News has NEVER unloaded on Santorum they way they have Newt. Santorum has been given a free ride compared to the vicious attacks from all the media, Fox News being the worst, for daring to challenge their annointed liberal Willard. If day in day out Santorum had been trashed by Faux the same way they trashed Newt, Professor Gingrich would have won both states going away. Now that is a fact folks.
