A minister in Morocco's Islamist government on Thursday called for a change to a law allowing a rapist to marry his victim after a 16-year-old teenager forced into such a union committed suicide.

Bassima Hakkaoui, Minister for Women and Families and the only woman in the cabinet, called for a debate to reform the law, in comments to state television channel 2M.

Her predecessor in the post Nouzha Skalli also declared herself shocked by the affair and called for the law to be changed.

Amina al-Filali, 16, drank rat poison last week in Larache, near Tangiers in the north, after being forced to marry the man who raped her.

He had sought to escape prison by invoking an article of the penal code that authorises the rapist to marry to escape prosecution.

Why would there be “outrage” when his action is condoned by his culture, religion, and penal system?

It would be interesting to see ow far the Morrocan opinion has traveled. Has anyone else in the backwards world of Islam taken note and acted on their barbaric perspective of the world?

It was prescribed in the old Testament - three thousand years ago. It was not unheard of in England three hundred years ago.

Thank God we’ve gone beyond that...but three hundred years is not much, really.

“Bassima Hakkaoui, Minister for Women and Families and the only woman in the cabinet, called for a debate to reform the law”

That’s going nowhere fast in the land of rapists and women as slaves.

FWIW, the Law of Moses had essentially the same provision.

Deuteronomy 22.

Though can you cite a Biblical instance in which it was carried out?

How about Hannah? That one ended on a happy note.

No, but then the Bible does not purport to be an exhaustive account of everything that happened in the land of Israel. AFAIK, there are, for instance, no accounts of executions for murder.

Just pray that if you’re ever a rape victim, your case is not heard in Judge Mark Martin’s court!

In Deut 22, it also says that "if they get caught" and that the man must marry her and cannot divorce her as long as he lives. It may be that it was considered "rape" to take a woman's virginity before she was married because the earlier part of the passages makes a big deal over virginity. The passage also says he HAS to marry her.

Of course, they did have the stoning to death for faking virginity and such. I find it interesting that the bloody sheet be used as proof of virginity - I wonder how many "sluts" were stoned to death because their hymen detached from physical exercise/labor...
