Santorum Says He Would Enforce US Obscenity Laws That Obama Ignores By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL -- Rick Santorum accused President Barack Obama of not enforcing the country's obscenity laws and said Friday that as chief executive he would crack down on illegal pornography.

Santorum found himself answering pornography questions during a stop at an Italian restaurant here after the discovery of a statement posted in his campaign website in which he asserts that "America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography." Recent reporting has shed light on the letter in which the former Pennsylvania senator vowed to "vigorously enforce" all the country's obscenity laws, though he said the statement was posted three weeks ago.

"We actually respond to questions that we get into our campaign when they say 'What are you going to do about these issues?' And when we respond we post them up on our website. And the response is, ‘we'll enforce the law,’" said Santorum.

"I don’t know what the hubbub about that is," he said. "We have a president who is not enforcing the law, and we will."

The candidate best known for espousing family values argues on his website that pornography causes changes in the brain to both children and adults, and contributes to violence against women, prostitution and sex trafficking. "The Obama administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography," he wrote.

If there are some common sense ones like libraries being able to provide filters on their computers for children, well what's wrong with that?

There are an infinity of possible laws out there which are "common sense" but none the less are not Constitutional.

If my city's library wants to set up computers in the children's section which are censored through a filter, the proper role of the Federal government is to butt out. That is not at all the same thing as saying that the role of the Federal government is to require filters in all library computers nationwide.

I quite agree.

Energy, Jobs, Defense, Fed, Obamacare, are all far higher priorities than porn.

Rick’s judgment is suspect. Out of touch with the majority of voters.

Newt certainly is dialed in.

--agree with both of your above posts--and am a little surprised at this thread as my post yesterday of basically the same thing (Drudge article) was pulled with no explanation after a few minutes---

and there really are "many Freepers" who don't grasp that these positions are not the same.

--I was informed on one of these threads few years ago that the concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is greatly overrated, incidentally--

I think this is a 10 issue that needs to be taken seriously. Kids are being forced to make porn, sex trafficking laws should be enforced. Why should Obama ignore the laws on the books. Santorum would become the best President in the History of the United States. I look at him as someone who would clean up the United States so much. What a shame that some FREEPERS are so immoral.

Like so many Republicans before him, Santorum has a gift for finding issues that A) elicit a collective groan from the electorate, and, B) provide fodder for the opposition.

Say after me, Rick. LESS GOVERNMENT, LESS GOVERNMENT, LESS GOVERNMENT.....(and alternate with) HANDS OFF THE INTERNET, HANDS OFF THE INTERNET....(repeat until you get it).

Energy, jobs, defense, dumping Obamacare—these are like bread and butter, paying the rent and other immediate needs like getting out of bed in the morning and mowing the lawn regularly.

But porn is like the termites which are an unseen but evil pestilence, slowly eating away at the foundations until the entire building is on the verge of collapse.

Unless we kill them first.

It must be Newt! If Santorum is the candidate, the election will be about his SERP. 2012 has got to be about Obama! the economy, STUPID! and not about morals!

I disagree with you. If people think it is ONLY the economy then the race would be only Newt and Romney. People care about social issues which is why Santorum is winning and getting the votes. People care about social issues. It is just that YOU DON’T care about social issues.

Excellent point, N Sojac. The problems come in when some ACLU types sue a local library for doing just that....establishing control over what filters are provided. Then the library, city, county, whatever has to come up with the bucks to fight this case which most of the time, they won’t have. These laws are passed to provide cover for cases like this.

There are no easy answers, but I also agree with your point about the proper role of Federal govt.

Seriously? MSNBC reports this like any sane, healthy, mentally stable person worries about his or her stash of porn being cut off. Good, honorable, decent people don't have anything to do with porn and if I were Rick Santorum I wouldn't be one bit ashamed of stating my anti-porn, anti-filth, anti-liberal positions on anything. I wouldn't want scumbags voting for me and Rick shouldn't want them voting for him either. Shout it out from the roof tops.... PORN and all other manner of unrighteousness is BAD and will be fought against at every opportunity.

As always this is just my humble opinion.

Saint Rick needs to S T F U about these things. Stick w the economy stupid!

He can't. There is a reason Santorum is known primarily as a social values crusader. This is the stuff he most cares about and no matter how hard he or his advisers try, this sort of nonsense will come up again and again and again in a campaign. As as a general election nominee, Santorum would doom us to a landslide defeat that would take our House majority down with it.

Worse, Rick comes across as strident and judgmental and would alienate even many Republican voters who don't want anything to do with a candidate who wants to talk about why contraception is "not okay" and why we need to wage a war on porn. The guy is a walking electoral disaster waiting to happen.

People laugh now, but Pat Robertson actually did pretty well in the 1988 GOP primaries (one of his policy positions was to ban porn), came in second in Iowa and won some primary/caucus states. He'd have been an embarrassingly bad general election nominee and obviously would have doomed the GOP to defeat, but a certain segment of social conservatives voters (over a million before he dropped out) cast ballots for him anyway. In 2008 it was Mike Huckabee social conservatives gravitated to - not because Huckabee was particularly conservative when it came to government policy, but because they deemed him the most God-fearing candidate. Santorum is just another in the same mold and winning the same core of voters. He's only lasted this long because A)he was such an afterthought of a non-Romney candidate that most people ignored him for months, and B)our frontrunner, Romney, inspires pretty much nobody and is a terribly poor candidate himself who stands for pretty much nothing.

I want Newt to stay in till the end no matter what happens, mostly because I can't stand the thought of having to dig deep within myself and find a way to rally around either Mitt "the chameleon" Romney or Rick "lets talk about why contraception is not okay" Santorum.

Frankly, in the scheme of things on a scale from 1 (least important) to 10 (metaphysical importance), porn rates a .0005

I agree. Rick walked into a trap.

We have a bad economy, high unemployment, cities and states on the edge of bankruptcy, we're still dependent on foreign oil, gas is sky high, we have Islamic states falling to jihadi factions, illegal immigrants up the wazoo.

And if Rick wins the nomination, all the media will play about Rick leading up to November will be this porn sound bite.

The Left is already banding together to do exactly what you say.

They are very keen, in knowing that Santorum will be all too easy to beat. There is a Daily KOS group that has been formed that go from open primary to open primary, with orders to vote for Santorum, to get him nominated.

This is an actual plan. Because they have so much they can destroy Santorum with, that they are holding all of it until he gets the nomination.

Santorum as our nominee, will be an utter disaster, especially after the Left hits the polls in record numbers and also votes in more Democrats for both houses.

And how are you so noble and pure that you are able to judge people this way?

As someone that has worked around IT for years let me tell you, almost everyone who says they don't look at internet porn is lying. That doesn't mean everyone views it, just far more people than you are allowing yourself to believe - and the vast majority are good and honorable folks.

Sorry, internet porn is not a pressing national problem.

Dear Bobbisox,
You have just voiced one of my chief reasons for NOT supporting Santorum. I have hesitated to share this one publicly, though. You see, we are the parents of a medically fragile, severely disabled child. We walk in these shoes everyday and we know the toll that the stress and strain takes on a person, on a marriage, on a family.

I have so much more that I wish I could say about the issue but I will leave it at that. If a person has never walked in these shoes, they would never understand my opinions.

BTW, as much as I love Sarah Palin, I had the very same hesitations about her serving, too.

You should be happy he is bringing this up. You hate this conservative Christian Family Values candidate so anything he says to mess up should be a thrill for you. I am surprised that you are bashing him. You should be convincing him. I on the other hand am glad because most the voters don’t agree with your assessment as proof of his 10 state wins and popular vote.

You forgot to mention the fact that inflation is starting to run away, after 3 years of “Quantitative Easing” and a deficit that went from 350 Billion in the last year of Bush, to over 1.3 Trillion in Obama’s second year.

This fact alone, is what will wreck this economy faster than all the other issues combined.

The above section shows beyond the faintest shadow of a doubt that pornography users routinely engage in a wide range of violent and sadistic crimes, committed not only against themselves, but against other persons as well.

Really? Everybody who has ever read Playboy routinely goes out and rapes women in the night, after torturing them?

Dems would be ecstatic if some member of Rick's staff seriously came out with anything resembling this drivel.
