As if Rick Santorum's campaign trip to Puerto Rico couldn't get any more cringe-worthy.
The Republican presidential candidate is red-faced after a tourist snapped a less-than-flattering photo of him sunbathing poolside on the island.
"I know I probably should lose, 15, 20 pounds, but I'm working on it," Santorum said during a radio interview on the Steve Cochran Show on Friday, after the flabby photo made the rounds.
The picture was first posted by Buzzfeed.
The former Pennsylvania senator said he snuck some sun in during an hour he had to spare between campaign events ahead of Sunday's primary in Puerto Rico.
Santorum said he was simply trying to "catch a few rays," adding, "I didn't know that anyone was taking a picture of us. I apologize to all of those because I'm sure that's not a pretty sight."
The embarrassing photo comes the same week Santorum came under fire for declaring English would have to be Puerto Rico's official language if the U.S. commonwealth wants to become a state.
He later sought to clarify his remarks.
"Obviously Spanish would be the language here," he told reporters in Puerto Rico on Thursday.
"We understand that you know the people of different cultures speak different languages but we have a common language, and that's what I was saying yesterday, he added.
I seriously doubt Newt will be parading around in a swim suit for the liberal press.

Both shots show entirely appropriate settings.
No apologies necessary.
Not every fella has a 6-pack like Joe, y’know. “;^)
Small minds cannot be perplexed or frightened but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a clock during a thunderstorm.
I think his reponse to the photo was kinda funny. Most people take themselves too seriously. It’s nice to see some sense of humor. And humility!
I don’t think he looks very bad in that picture. I’m hoping he apologized w/ humour...because he looks way better than most men his age that I see sitting around a pool. I really don’t see the big deal.
Um. Why is this a story? Seriously?
So there’s a “bathing suit competition” for presidential candidates now? :)
MAD Magazine covered that topic some years back, 1972 or 1976 (I recall).
Those two words again:
Conservative. Apologize.
(sigh)
I do not like Rick and I will not vote for him, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with the guy taking some time in the sun.
Heck, every time I try to do that, folks from Greenpeace try to put me back into the ocean.
Talk about a small mind. The country is falling apart and the best thing you can do is post a picture of a middle aged man relaxing in a lounge chair photographed by some gays on a boat.
Ain’t you funny!
I figured Newt would look far worse. He looks fatter in clothes which is weird.
This is so silly. He’s a human being.
Oh really? I haven’t seen you there! LOL
Rangel, otoh, looks like he's taking a drunken snooze.
Aint you funny!
*******
Thank you. Regrettably, your posts directed to me in this thread are not.
No. And that is precisely the point. Newt has the damn sense not to go out half naked, as a presidential candidate who has the media after you, and naively expect that no one will be lurking around to snap a picture. Rookie error. Again.
I think newt was slimmer back when he posed on that rock.
I did, also. Regrettably, some of Rick’s supporters are so judgmental, they can’t find the light side in any aspect of the human condition.
