County Road 98 in Polk County, Fla., was scrubbed today by a group of atheists who are protesting the “Polk Under Prayer” campaign, supporters of which poured olive oil on the road last year in an anointment ceremony.
“Mainly we want this to be a safe haven for folks who want to raise their families,” explained Polk Under Prayer organizer, Dr. Richard Geringswald, according to ABC News affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa. “Asking God’s protection from ne’er do wells and evil doers.”
Ellen Beth Wachs, the president of Humanists of Florida Association and Atheists of Florida, said that she feels unwelcome as an atheist in the county.
“This anointment ritual was to call out the angels to check each car that entered the county, to make sure they were Christian, and if they weren’t Christian, they would either follow Christian beliefs or get put in jail,” Wachs told ABC News.
Wachs said the eight members of the Humanists of Florida Association who brought buckets of water to the roadway today did so in jest. “They understand that a year later, there’s no oil left on the roadway. It’s just a symbolic gesture to show that we can poke a little bit of fun at the Polk Under Prayer gesture. We’re not going to tolerate their bigotry,” Wachs said.

I’m not mocking cristians,but there are “rituals” that do nothing and pouring oil on the road is one of them. There are cristians who would say the same thing.
This “ritual” is also a ploy to bring non-cristians to cristianity. The minister pretty much said so himself,except in different words.
When cristians practice cristianity that is fine. But they step over the line when they try to convert others,be they Jewish,Hindu,Buddist,etc through “rituals”,street preachers who get in people’s faces or other individuals who have this arrogant belief that their way is the only way and that others are doomed to hell.
The “You are going to hell without jsus” is what turns me off to cristianity and why I have a hostile attitude to those who preach such garbage.
The last time I checked,this was not a caucus limited to certain individuals and if you ceased with the instigation I would not have responded the way I did.

Any Atheist who does something to protest something a faithful person does, or is offended by it isn’t a true Atheist, but just a rabble rouser.
After all if one is atheist, one does not believe in God, so anything anyone does in his name is just a silly ceremony that has no meaning or merrit to you, since you don’t believe in it. If you feel you have to protest, or undo what a faithful person has done, you are intrinsically accepting what they did had meaning.. but if how can it have any meaning if what it was done for is something you claim does not exist?
So, in short, if an Atheist is offended by secular behaviors or actions, the Atheist isn’t a true Atheist, they are just a religion hater, and that’s not what Ahteism is.

I am not a fan of the in your face acts of some folks, but hardly am I offended by the fact they believe their way is the only way to Heaven.. hell that’s what every monotheist religion is based on. Religion X’s beliefs are right, and only those who believe it get their eternal reward, that’s fundamental tenant of any montheist religion.. so not exactly sure how one can be offended by what someone else believes. Someone believes you must wash in swamp water every 3rd sunday of the year to get to heaven, that’s their belief and they are fine with it, doesn’t offend me.
I really don’t get this angry, defensive arrogant attitude.. Yes, I’ve been annoyed by agressive preachers who I don’t agree with, but by and large I don’t brand everyone of relgious faith whos is proselitizing as somehow stepping over some line. They are free to share their beliefs with others willing to listen.. doesn’t bother me in the least.
