WASHINGTONRepublican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum says the United States should either commit to winning the war in Afghanistan or "get out."
Santorum tells ABC's "This Week" that he agrees with rival Newt Gingrich that a commitment to "winning" means recognizing the U.S. will stay in Afghanistan "to finish the job."

Newt is right, and should be our Presidential candidate with Santorum as VP until he learns the job.
Santorum has also co-opted Newt’s term for Romney, “Massachusetts Moderate.”
How do you finish there? You can’t nation build with 7th century islamic savages.
I will NEVER forgive Vesty for calling Staff Sergeant Bales a madman BEFORE he had all the facts!
And Santorum called on Obama to apologize! do they apologize to us for murdering our soldiers? NO!
GTFO of Afghanistan!
Ok. I will bite. Newt is our nominee. Now what states will he win? He has SC and GA so far and that is about 19 electoral college. He needs 270 to win. How does he do this? That is a question nobody every answers.
Right - should have never done any more in Afghanistan than to bomb the Taliban camps and get the hell out. Nothing more was or would be possible there. Bush blew it, and Obama continues the insanity. We are NEVER told the truth any more - I mean, the Whole Truth and nothing but the TRUTH so help us God.
You know, when Barry Goldwater made this same argument about Viet Nam in 1964 LBJ and the media painted him as a crazy war monger. They ran the infamous “daisy” commercial and countered Goldwater’s slogan of “In your heart, you know he’s right” with “In your guts, you know he’s nuts!”
Everything old is new again.
NRO: “Worse Than A Powder Keg” .............”This was the chaos into which Secretary Panetta descended. After dodging the assassination attempt, he was to address American forces and their Afghan trainees in a tent where the only security would be the United States Marines. Yet the Marines were ordered to disarm before entering. From on high came the directive: They were to check their automatic rifles and pistols outside the tent. Only then would Panetta appear.
It is hard to decide which explanation for this is more infuriating. There is the one the Marines were given: Since it would have been insane to allow Afghan soldiers, whose treachery is notorious, to be armed, the always faithful Marines had to be disarmed in order to show that our government considers them no better than their Afghan partners. The Marines would know this rationale is fraudulent: It is entirely ordinary for them to remain armed, and for Afghans not to be armed in the first place, during a visit from the secretary of defense to a combat theater.
Hence the explanation the Marines were tacitly left to ponder: As shameful Afghan officials castigated the American troops on whom they depend, and the Taliban hurled charges of genocide, American commanders taking their cues from the apologizer-in-chief disarmed the Marines to show that we take such bloviating seriously.
While Panetta addressed our defrocked troops, the savages were up to their usual grisly business. Tim Lynch, a retired Marine now embedded in Afghanistan, summed it up well in an e-mail to journalist Michael Yon: The Taliban killed 13 women and children today with an IED in Uruzgan and I think they got 8 yesterday but thats all cool here because theyre the Taliban and were the big, fat, retarded kid on the block who gets bullied everyday but still shows up to fork over even more lunch money while assuming at some point everyone will like us because were so [deleted] generous. ..............
I didn’t say he could win.
What I am saying is that he is the only one with the brains and training to save America.
No: I am pretty sure we will get a loser, in fatc I would bet Romney will be the Candidate, He will be a token President run by the RINO leadership.
I will vote for Newt because in my ind he is capable and the others aren’t. That’s the best I can do. I cannot convince enough others of this for him to win. They want a “Moderate” not a Conservative, and they will probably get a liberal posing as moderate-—Romney.
Translation: I have no idea what to do, but I need to look tough on TV.
Newt is the man.
Unfortunately too many do not agree.
Depressing but accurate post.
Romney: Obama has failed in Afghanistan WASHINGTON Mitt Romney says President Barack Obama has failed in Afghanistan.
The Republican presidential hopeful told "Fox News Sunday" that the president is partly to blame for the chaos there and should have been "more engaged" with military commanders and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Romney said any U.S. withdrawal should be determined by military commanders. At the same time, he said, Afghans should be taking more responsibility for security because "we're not going to stay there forever."
One week ago on Fox News Sunday:
....”In some of his strongest language about the role of the U.S. in Afghanistan, Mr. Gingrich said on Fox News Sunday he had reached the conclusion frankly about the entire region that is much more pessimistic than Washingtons official position.
I think were risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that frankly may not be doable, he said.”
Sounds like time to bug out to me. Let that dump rot.
CW, funny how these candidates want Newt to withdraw.
If he did, how would they know what to say?
“Hence the explanation the Marines were tacitly left to ponder: As shameful Afghan officials castigated the American troops on whom they depend, and the Taliban hurled charges of genocide, American commanders taking their cues from the apologizer-in-chief disarmed the Marines to show that we take such bloviating seriously.”
Or.....has the administration begun to worry about its own military....afraid that one of them might take a shot at Secretary Panetta? That was my first reaction to diarming them. Have things degraded that far? Are officials now starting to fear our own troops? I find that alarming.
The only path to “victory” in Afghanistan would be to convert them all to Christianity. As long as they remain a majority Muslim country there is no hope for any kind of victory.
For these people going to Hell will be an improvement in their living condition. And that is where most of them are headed.
I would disagree, it didn’t work with Reagan/Bush it wont work with Gingrich/Santorum either.
Although the nation would be in a better spot and probably last me through my life time. Then it’s up to the next gen to find their Reagan/Gingrich tag team.
“What the F**k does “winning” and “finish the job” mean in that 9th century Islamic hell hole????????”
(1) Totally destroying the Taliban in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Or any other militant Islamic group.
(2) Establish true religious liberty in the country so that radical Islamists can no longer hold sway.
(3) Dismantle the Karzai government and establish one that is not corrupt and friendly to the U.S. and West. A solid Afghan military that doesn’t need outside help to suppress radicals and maintain peace. No more rogue Islamic countries that are safe havens to radical groups.
IF those aren’t our goals, then we may as well retreat in shame.
As much as I dont really like Newt, he makes sense. And with Rick as VP,maybe it would work.
Too bad thier egos wont allow it. But It would be a good ticket anyways.
“The only path to victory in Afghanistan would be to convert them all to Christianity.”
This isn’t doable. However, establishing “Freedom of Religion” where Islam isn’t in control is doable. Conversion to Christianity has to be a personal thing. It cannot be forced. However, an environment where it is safe to be Christian would be a step in the right direction.
Back when Bush was in office people had those get out of ...Iraq or Afghanistan, odd how i don’t see them anymore.
i want one. now though
FWIW, the Conquistadors did it in South America.
As usual, Rick is late to the game on the critical issues of the day ... and the campaign.
Just saw post #10 now. You were already on the same page!
Then Ive been saying that since 9-11.
Somebody needs to ask this guy just what he means by that.
Of course he does not know. Nobody knows.
We have no interest or business in Afghanistan unless we intend to invade Iran from there...unlikely as Afghanistan has no opening to the sea.
We should have pulled out of there in late 2002. All the spilt blood of patriots since has been wasted.
Bush and Obama share responsibility for this disaster.
Yep - all of the good stuff Santorum comes out with has already been said by Newt and with more clarity. Rick started aping Newt just before he started winning primaries/caucuses and knows that if he does this it makes him sound like a winner. He could learn a lot at Newt's knee.
I believe Newt can win in November, He is the one causing obama problems now with gas prices, Newt is the only one obama is responding to and obama is dropping in the polls. Newt has the solutions to our problems and is able to articulate the problem and solution where all can understand it. Newt can speak to the people and generate an enthusiasm. I believe Newt can overcome the Romney / Paul negativity and I don’t believe the obama negativity will register. If Newt can’t beat obama we won’t have a candidate who can. We have one extrodinary individual available that can see us through these times, others will only postpone the inevitable if they were to get elected.
and leave it a smoldering crater.
He’s voting “present” on that for now.
We won Afghanistan. It took longer than Iraq, but we won it. What we are doing now is not a war. Kill the enemy and either make it a colony, or leave.
Probably the same states Santorum would win. Just because he won the Minnesota primary, doesnt mean he will win their EV’s.
Conquest always dies of indigestion.
Would winning mean exterminating the world’s source of 90% of its heroin?
“FWIW, the Conquistadors did it in South America.”
They didn’t “convert” anybody. They conquered and destroyed a culture looking for gold. Also, many of those killed were by the Smallpox disease they brought with them.
Later, some probably genuienly believed. Like I said, you cannot make someone a “Christian” at the point of the sword. To be a genuine Christian you must have faith which cannot be forced.
What one can do is topple the Islamic monopoly held in those countries and create an environment where people are free and secure to believe (or not) what they chose to believe. In that kind of environment, I “believe”, Christianity will eventually fluorish and pacify the area.
....."Santorum, interviewed on ABC's "This Week," said that he agrees "in some respects" with Gingrich. "If the game plan is, were leaving, irrespective of whether were going to succeed or not, then why are we still there? Lets either commit to winning or lets get out," he said. But Santorum wouldnt say which of those options he would pick.
"If you commit to winning, you change the entire dynamic in the region," the former senator said. "That may not mean the heavy footprint that we have in Afghanistan right now." Santorum said he would "work with our experts in that area to see what troop complement we would need, and work with the Afghan government to make sure that we commit to them to be successful, at whatever, whatever that means, whatever thats necessary to accomplish."
Romney used the word "failure" in describing the situation in Afghanistan, but the former Massachusetts governor gave a rambling response to host Bret Baier's repeated efforts to pin him down on whether he would speed up the U.S. pullout.
"The timing of withdrawal is going to be dependent upon what you hear from the conditions on the ground -- that you understand by speaking with commanders there, as well as, of course, the people in Afghanistan and their ability to maintain their sovereignty and to have the capacity, to have a military that can stand up to the challenges they face. The timetable, the guidelines, that continue to be into effect, unless, of course, there are changes in conditions that suggest a faster withdrawal. But recognize, that ultimately, the independence and the security of Afghanistan is going to have to be secured and maintained by the Afghans themselves. Were not going to stay there forever," Romney said."..... Romney, Santorum hedge on future U.S. role in Afghanistan
A good thing to remember.
Consider what Bush said on Sep 20, 2001....
Sep 20, 2001- BUSH:...
"tonight, the United States of America makes the following demands on the Taliban:
- Deliver all the leaders of Al Qaida who hide in your land.
- Release all foreign nationals you have unjustly imprisoned.
- Protect foreigners in your country.
- Close every terrorist training camp in Afghanistan
- Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps
- The Taliban must act and act immediately.
- They will hand over the terrorists, or they will share in their fate.
June 15, 2004 - BUSH:
"Afghanistan is no longer a terrorist factory sending thousands of killers into the world."
At that point, we should have armed them to the teeth and provided them with strategic air support for their ground troops, and given them complete ownership of their ground war so that they could have negotiated their own settlement with Pakistan to contain the Taliban from Pakistan.
