If there ever was a candidate who "couldn't connect with the people" it was Richard Nixon. Yet in 1968 "The New Nixon" won election, and won a monster landslide four years later.
Don't count Romney out just because he appears contrived and awkward around common people. There are more important variables at work than being mediagenic.
