Romney, Santorum struggle to arouse consistent passion in their own voters, exit polls show
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | March 19, 2012 | ALAN FRAM

WASHINGTON - Mitt Romney may lead in delegates and Rick Santorum might have momentum, but neither of the two leading Republican presidential candidates is having an easy time exciting even his own voters.

Out of a dozen states where voters in the GOP contest have been polled, most Romney voters have said they strongly favor him in just five of them. A majority of Santorum voters felt that committed to him only four times out of 11 states where he was on the ballot and voters were surveyed.

Each man is struggling to consistently spark the intensity that could separate him from the pack.

Consider that Arizona is the only state where Romney had a higher proportion of voters expressing strong feelings about him than his rivals did. And Santorum hasn't had that edge in any state yet, despite an animated campaign style and passion for hot-button social issues like contraception that have contrasted with Romney's stiffer, more analytic manner.

On average, 50 percent of Romney voters and 49 percent of Santorum's say they strongly favor their candidate, with the rest expressing reservations about their man or a greater dislike for his rivals, according to entrance and exit polls of voters in 12 states.

When it comes to winning fervent devotion from his own supporters, both men trail former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul. Those two GOP presidential campaigns are lagging but 58 percent of Gingrich's backers and 53 percent of Paul's, on average, say they strongly favor their candidate. Analysts say higher percentages of devoted supporters are common with candidates whose lesser backing leaves them with only the most committed followers...........

My GUESS is that the true Paulbots got surprised and disappointed to find out that Paul and Romney are close (and their wives as well). They know what Romney's record is and it is NOT consistent with what RP seems to stand for.

Yep and I agree with the rest of your comments as well.

GO NEWT!

Liar Perry called himself a conservative, yet refused to build a fence for the Border, catered to ILLEGALS, and didn't believe in freedom for parents to choose medicines for their own children. What a disgusting RINO Perry was.

Go have a cup of tea. You're on some sort of tear that is ugly and a lie. Perry believes in fencing in populated areas where they work, a sealed border and NO amnesty. The parents could more easily pay for the cervical cancer shot with the governor's executive order for vaccines (as the legislature placed that duty with the governor's office) and to opt out of all vaccines. No one received that shot under the EO as it was rescinded without objection.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Never mind that Santorum whole heartily endorsed Romney in ‘08, so who's the liar now?

Hello POT, meet KETTLE!

Waaaah, waaaah, waaaah... poor Rick. It’s just not right that people on FR are saying bad things about him/ sarc

My gosh man (or woman, I am not sure) HAVE YOU READ THE FALSE, HYPOCRITICAL, REVISIONIST-HISTORY, CONSPIRACY-THEORY, JUDGMENTAL ATTACKS ON GINGRICH THAT GET HURLED AT HIM AND HIS SUPPORTERS EVERYDAY?!!

I believe that YOU have actually engaged in a number of them. And now you are whining about people on FR attacking and ridiculing Santorum while saying NOTHING about the attacks on Gingrich.

If you go back and check ALL of my posts the only negative things that I have every said about Santorum is that I believe he has cast too many pro-union votes, that he has been a “team player” too many times and that I believe with all of my heart and soul that HE CAN’T BEAT OBAMA.

Newt already helped Santorum win one election. When Newt was Speaker..Santorum was swept into office during the gop revoloution.

Santorum..Newt is RIGHT!

IF Romney spent as much money blasting Rick Santorum with smear attacks as he did Newt...Rick would be polling in single digits..the man has slithered through the first half of this election with little vetting

Your whole post is a primal scream and not attached to any reality. What would you ever do if your caps lock busted?

Which it will if you don’t quit smacking it with such angst.

All in all, common sense is nowhere in your vocabulary.

Just hate and rage.

By the way, I don’t see anyone attacking poor Newt lately. They have no need to.

I would say have a nice day. But most likely you won’t. LOL

This from a comment section on another site I thought makes a statement or two concerning Newt.

The reason Newt's former colleagues won't endorse him is because if he is elected, their cushy DC insider 'elite' lifestyle... is over.

He shook up DC before crossing the aisle to work with Clinton for the good of the country and stepped on a lot of ego's in order to do the people's business.

I challenge ANYONE who after taking an unbiased look at Newt's current detailed plan for America's Recovery AND his resume for SUCCESS and getting things done in DC, to instead choose an empty suit with NO plan or a social right wing extremist who has ALREADY divided rather than united the general electorate.

Currently Gingrich is the ONLY GOP inside Obama's head having forced Chairman Bow to engage vis a vis his FAILED American Energy Policy.

Obama WANTS Romney or Santorum. Obama FEARS Newt Gingrich..... Think Sun Tzu The Art of War..... America can't afford another 2008 McCain disaster..... WAKE UP AMERICA.

Well said! priceless quote from Sir Winston Churchill too.

caww, I read his bio and his childhood was not an easy one. Newt is a self made man and his record as Speaker is historical..did wonders for the conservative movement in this country. Read a comment about a young Rick Santorum going to a game at Three Rivers Stadium with a friend. Santorum popped a cassette in and the friend said, "who is that?" Santorum replied.."that is Newt Gingrich! you have to listen to this man" Surely you have seen the more recent video of Santorum praising Newt? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl5FrefT66A

Newt's been coaching Santorum in this Primary as well. But people are blinded to that fact because they want Santorum to simply win. God bless Newt for stepping back and letting Santorum ride the wave he had....Newt's all about keeping Romney out and making certain Obama is defeated. ....and he will do this even at peril of his own run.

I will never for the life of me understand why people would favor Santorum over Newt...except they are for the most part religious minded and that's good enough for them Santorum represents them in the social affairs of men.....but it is not good enough for those who see further than those issues and see a nation which needs a packaged deal brought to the table...and Newt has the entire package and the correct approach when it comes to the social affairs of men.

Santorum plays to the emotions of the religious...Newt plays to 'our Nation Under God' according to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence....which then is acceptable even to the nonreligious. Rick lacks that entirely in how he's going about the social issues.

I don't think it's our system of how we elect which is the greater problem as much as the population we have today.....,who most are no longer assimilating as Americans as was done in years prior, but attempting to use and change our laws to accommodate their ideas of what the face of this nation should be...and it's not the America I have known by any means. Santorum has already shown he will not be able to defeat Obama....Newt can and I remain loyal to his run and do not underestimate the outcome when all the cards are played.

Sorry if my “primal”ness scared you! LOL!!

Part of the reason why I reacted to your post with such “angst” is that I had just been reading some of those “attacks” on a couple of other threads. So yeah, I was riled up.

I am not crazy about Santorum, never have been. But I could vote for him. And I do agree with you about FReepers not attacking Rick OR Newt (sorry, I used the all caps again, see it is not busted :))) But it really isn’t just Rick that is getting attacked. Both of them are getting it, and getting it good. It just goes to show you have passionate we ALL are, how personal getting rid of Obama is to ALL of us.
Peace to you, my fellow FReeper!

No Newt's childhood was not easy but look what he has done in overcoming that! Amazing example of overcoming and fighting your way thru life.

As for Santorum...as I've said before he bares all the "earmarks" of the mindset in the town he grew up in. You're either very ridgid or anything goes. Ricks very staunch. I frankly just don't like the man's personality as it does reflect those of his hometown.... Arrogance when there's nothing to be arrogant about....and at the same time clumsey in how they present themselves....and then expecting others to "lift" them up so they can run life's race.... And that is Santorum.

Heck he wouldn't be this far without Newt towing his line thru this Primary. I just wish he'd let Santorum go and focus entirely on his own run...but then I suspect this too is part of Newt's plan.

Santorum is not even in Newt’s league. He is a pious little fraud.
You know his nickname in highschool was “Rooster” they said because he got riled up easily..I would think it fits because he crows about the wrong issues
