SANFORD, Fla. - Federal prosecutors and the FBI have opened an investigation into the killing of an unarmed teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford.
The death drew protesters Monday to the courthouse in Seminole County, north of Orlando, to demand justice for Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot and killed last month while walking back to his father's fiancee's house in Sanford.
The African-American teen's parents said Monday that they believed race was a factor in their son's death, and the Congressional Black Caucus had called for a federal investigation, saying local police have shown "blatant disregard for justice."
Late Monday, the Justice Department said it would dispatch officials to Sanford to investigate and "to address tension in the community."
"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," Justice Department spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said in a written statement. "The department also is providing assistance to and cooperating with the state officials in their investigation into the incident."

Will the FBI pretend that Zimmerman is “white” too?
Obama’s Eric Holder has had the files for 3 days.
No arrest of the killer.
If all the feds did was read the news , they’d know there is enough to arrest the guy. Right?

I am so glad the FBI and the Justice Dept has gotten involved in this. I am sorry it has taken so long. They should have jumped on this long before they did.
Well, technically Zimmerman is white. He is not anglo saxon but he is caucasian. But what difference this makes I do not know. Nothing excuses his actions.
The problem here is the local cops/prosecutor simply misread the law ~ to make it all go away.
Sometimes they do that.
The family was not happy with that.
Neither were a lot of other people.
Zimmerman sure doesn’t look white to me. When I first saw his pic (before he was declared to be white) I thought: “What the hey, this guy is black!” And an Hispanic with the name Zimmerman?
Yeah, what do you figure his genetic make-up is (other than fat, dumb and ugly). Weird to have a German or possibly Yiddish name like Zimmerman, but look sort of Hispanic.
This Zimmerman guy sounds like a nut.

The FBI involved in an ongoing local shooting case? Has that ever happened before Holder’s race based Justice Dept.? My guess is this guy is screwed whether the shooting was justified or not. If they can’t get him on murder they’ll go after him for civil rights violations just like they did after the cops were exonerated in the Rodney King incident.

A lot of Germans emigrated (escaped?) to Latin America after WWII. Intermarriage with the locals could yield a child with Latino features and a German name.
A lot of Germans settled in Latin America and married local women.
One sure thing, Zimmerman is a marked man for life, guilty or innocent.
Why?
No Federal Jurisdiction is involved.
It is a local issue, unless you can show that a government agent, “under color of law” ordered or assisted in depriving someone of their civil rights, there is no Federal case.
There was no eye witnesses to the shooting, and Zimmerman declared it self defense. There needs to be a grand jury convened and if there is enough evidence then put him on trial in front of a jury. If I was ever in his shoes and it was a legitimate shooting I sure as heck would hope the state would not listen to mobs of angry people hell bent on it being a race crime and investigate it.
If he is charged then he has the right to a speedy trial, perhaps the DA is just waiting to get all the evidence/facts in order before he issues those charges. I have heard of many crimes not being prosecuted right away so the state has time to do a thorough investigation, perhaps that is all that is going on.
He is innocent until proven guilty, personally I think when it all ends he will find his ass under the jail where it belongs, but that is just IMHO.
