The shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin last month in Florida, at the hands of a member of the local neighborhood watch, has been sparking outrage across the nation, including Chicago, where protesters and public officials spoke out about the shooting over the weekend.
Martin, who was unarmed, was killed in Sanford, Fla., last month by community watch representative George Zimmerman, who has claimed he acted in self-defense.
No charges have been approved in the death of the teen, which occurred nearly a month ago.
The shooting has placed increased scrutiny on Florida’s so-called “stand your ground” self-defense law, which was passed in 2005 and permits residents to use deadly force if they “reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.” ....
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said changes are needed in attitude and the law to prevent another shooting of the type that left Trayvon dead.
At an unrelated event on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus Saturday, Durbin said he has seen no justification for the shooting.
“The only weapon he was carrying was a bag of Skittles,” Durbin said. “The only thing that he could have done to raise suspicions was walk black.” ....
“This notion that anyone can carry a gun and declare themselves a security official and roam the streets of any town in America should be thought through carefully.” Durbin said. “This man who was involved in this had four months of training. I have no idea if it was any good or not. He wouldn’t even follow the directions of a dispatcher who said to leave this young man alone.”

I see a lot of spin against the concept of neighborhood watch organizations being ginned up by the media. Combine neighborhood watch groups with CCW permits, stand-your-ground laws, and recent local burglaries: sounds too much like personal responsibility run amok.
If a white guy or mexican walks through Cabrini Green he would die in a Nuevo York minute. It would never make the news.

The constant race baiting hatred and jumping to conclusions without knowledge of all the facts by the liberal left politicians and the MSM is sickening. This is another Tawana Bradley (is that the right name?) moment for the racists JJackson and ASharpton.
They don’t bother to read about the witness’ account of seeing Martin jump Zimmerman and being on top of him giving him a beat down that resulted in a broken nose and required stitches to the back of his head, while yelling for help.
It’s really tiresome to see the MSM continue to show a photo of a 13-14 y/o Trayvon instead of the thuggish photo of him at 17-18 y/o, when over 6’ tall and around 200 lbs. It’s that kind of MSM crap that causes the uprisings among the black community activists.
