Doomsday Preppers

This just has to be a sign of the times. Record deficits and oil prices rising, and it could all get worse. So the National Geographic channel has begun airing a show named Doomsday Preppers, where viewers can watch end-of-the-world types prepare for doomsday.

Each episode highlights several people and their preparations for the end of the world, or, as they often put it, "when the stuff hits the fan." If you are a "doomsday prepper," the show has some pretty useful information, and if not, the show is still pretty entertaining.

Some of the calamities predicted by the preppers seem pretty far-fetched, like a shift in the earth's axis or an earthquake that divides the country's supply lines in half. But some of the calamities predicted are worth getting nervous about, like hyperinflation or a failure of the world financial system.

The preppers store or grow food, store water, generate their electricity, and prepare to defend themselves with handguns and homemade explosives. At the end of each segment, "experts" grade each prepper's plans.

Some of the prepper plans are pretty impressive. One episode involved an Arizona family who keeps a pool/greenhouse, with chicken above fertilizing a pool that contains quickly regenerating fish. A byproduct, duckweed, purifies the water and generates fertilizer for the vegetable gardens.

I like the show. There was one guy that had a sign on the hidden door to his preps that said something like “I am a bitter gun owner clinging to my religion”.

Several of the shows have featured preppers who have made statements like “The world has changed a lot in the last three years.” Never any mention of 0bysmal himself, but you can read between the lines.

Of course, there’s some real loons, too. The hippy guy who bought an old missile silo is a real laugh. His wife thinks we should all reconsider what America is really about. LOL. She’s a definite 0bummer disciple (prepping nonetheless). LOL.

There’s another program called Doomsday Bunkers, too.

I view these shows as so much garbage. Nothing more than Reality TV for the masses.

IMO- anyone that would display to the world what their preparations are is plain stupid. If SHTF does become reality, everyone in their neighborhood will come by with their hands out, unless government goons don't appropriate everything "for the common good" beforehand.

There is one thing I have noticed on the recent episodes. Originally they downplayed economic collapse. They have back away from that now.

I've noticed the same thing - they are starting to characterize economic collapse as being more imaginable.

Pandemic is certainly a possibility, and with modern transportation and population densities the outcome could be biblical in nature. There's a 9-part series available on YouTube entitled "After Armageddon" that does a good job of portraying this (I bet you've already seen it).

Available from $.02 at Amazon (but they won't tell you that fishing is a thinly veiled excuse for drinking.) It's a simple as sitting on a bank with a radio and drowning worms. All the fancy gear is not essential but, if you get a boat, Call Me?!

Mel Tappan, 1933-1980

Vacuum pack for ammo and all sorts of other stuff. Nice pull on the archived gun mags. The 9mm vs. .45 debate was raging back then.

Cheers

I’m trying to build one myself right now. 10x12, 3 ft. of dirt on top, 8 inches of concrete and rebar. Kind of a dual purpose. Two big bulls eyes in this area, and super cells overhead for the last two years.

This is what Dad & I built, but 2x as large, several years ago (scroll down), and nicely furnished/well-stocked:

“Two big bulls eyes in this area, and super cells overhead for the last two years.”

A couple of big ones just missed our 200ac farm by 1+ miles, so I know the damage it can wreak, as evidenced by the rescue/recovery ops we did.

Take care and be safe, c...

Yes; I’m now looking at alternative vent systems retrofits. 210 days food/water for 4, and if one isn’t wasteful, 240 days. It’s 40ft x 20ft, with 3ft deep storage area under the entire floor. It can handle 6, if need be.
