International Debut for the Russian T-90MS Tank Upgrade at DefExpo 2012

The centerpiece of the Russian display at Defexpo 2012 is undoubtedly the T-90MS upgrade program developed by the Russian Uralvagonzavod corporation. The T-90MS upgrade was unveiled August 2011 at Nizhny Tagil, Russia following the demise of the T-95 program. It is making its international debut here in New Delhi. India is likely to be the most interested in the the Russian upgrade, put forward by Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport as a possible upgrade path for the Indian ‘Brishna’ (T-90S) tanks.

India is the largest operator of the T-90S, along with Russia. The Indian Army has fielded about 450 of these tanks, with 300 more on order. Other T-90 operators are Azerbaijan, Cyprus (45) and Venezuela (92). Earlier in 2012 it was announced that Algeria has bought 120 of these tanks.Additional 30 were acquired by Turkmenistan. These small deliveries could be the result of the collapse of the Libyan order, which was never fulfilled.

The Indian Army had planned to equip its 59 armored regiments with 1,657 T-90S main battle tanks, 1,000 of which were to be Indian-made. However, production and import of T-90S tanks has been slow, hence, the opportunity to improve the T-90 through the manufacturing line, maintaining the T-90 effectiveness for upcoming years. The T-90MS offers improvements in every important element – protection, mobility and firepower, in addition to improving sustainability and reliability while reducing operating cost. Since the contract was signed back in 2001 the Indian Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Chennai has assembled only 150 T-90S (of a thousand planned). Implementing the T-90MS package will enable future production series to deliver better, more capable main battle tanks instead of gradually obsoleting platforms.

The proposed tank upgrades include improved automotive components, enhanced protection by

Early on in this debate noob I offered examples of poor Russian tank design such cramped crew compartment and dangerous ammo storage. You haven’t done anything but offer a relativistic ‘’we’re no better than they are’’ response. Who’’s the juvenile here? Also as I said to ‘’cunning fish’’ one should never under estimate one’s enemy
and I said the Sherman tank was a piece of crap compared to the superior tanks the Germans had in WW2. Other examples of lousy American weapons was the Douglas Devastator Torpedo Bomber, ever hear of it? Do me a favor and get lost, this exchange has gone on long enough and in the grand scheme of things doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. heck, even now the Russian are hard at work building more pieces of crap. But before you do that get yourself a copy of the book “MiG Pilot’’ by Viktor Blenko and read it as I did thirty years ago. And as the Brits are fond of saying ‘’Sod off!’’.

Whoa! What was that about?!!

You last post was THE MOST mindless, incoherent, nonsensical blather I heard in all the time spent on FR. It didn't have a shred of any meaningful, intelligent thought or coherent, rational or cogent articulation. Looks like you had a mental breakdown in the middle or the night.

You should have take your meds and stayed in bed old man. Instead you decided to get up and piss, barf and take a dump on FR. You post is like a train wreck. Nothing makes any sense.

As for the book you read 30 years ago......maybe its time for you to get some new books..... if you still remember how to read, that is.

You’re right about human life being worthless in Russia. They don’t even value their own lives, much less others. I read about Russians delivering themselves and their families up for horrible executions rather than running like hell, or fighting to the last breath. Weird people.

Doesn’t have much to do with tanks. Russians might not value their people, but hardware is expensive and hard to replace. They built the best tank they could given certain limitations (doctrine, rail system, quantities required, etc.). It pays never to underestimate the vehicle or its crews. I still like the story of how the A6M Zero and the quality of Japanese Naval Aviation came as huge surprise despite the fact that the USN had been warned about them by American mercenaries (not Flying Tigers) who flew against them. I would hate to have that sort of surprise sprung on us again.

The only folks who have gone up against the Russians in recent history are Chechens (who lost) and the Georgians (who lost). Chechnya was a mess, but the war against Georgia went like clockwork. I’d rather overestimate an opponent and use too much force, than underestimate and use too little...

Read the book “Dragonfly’’ It’s about the Soviet Mir space station, a floating pile of junk we pumped 400 million a year(that was my tax dollars and yours) to keep up there in space. This book will make your hair stand on end. The Russkies don’t give a G-damn about ANYTHING ! The average Russkie is only out for himself.

>>>>>>>I haven’t followed the developent of the T-90 series for a long time. When did they stop using a cast steel turret for a more Abrams-like turret?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Wasn’t T-64 the first ever to use composite armor back to earlier 60s?

the T-64/72 series did start using composite, not sure if it was the 60s though. But definitely in the 60s they were using cast metal technology, not like the T-90.

In fact T-64 had it in 1963. Earlier than any Western tank in production. AFAIK US tanks were cast metal at the time.
