A Virginia Beach high school teacher accused in the sexual battery of one of his students has been found guilty. Back in Jan., the student accused Michael Shanklin, Jr. of spanking her. Police arrested Shanklin, 37, and charged him with abduction and sexual battery of a minor. Shanklin was tried Thursday on the sexual battery charge, found guilty and sentenced to 12 months in jail. Police said on Jan. 18 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a student at Landstown High School stayed after school for a tutoring session. The student failed to complete an assignment and the teacher reportedly felt the student needed to be punished. Police said Shanklin proceeded to strike the student on her buttocks with a belt numerous times. Macie Pridgen, with the Commonwealth's Attorney Office, said the student was allegedly struck 20 times. Afterwards, the student left the classroom and reported the incident to the school nurse. Pridgen said Shanklin noted his appeal during the trial. Thursday's trial also included a preliminary hearing on the felony abduction charge, which was certified by a grand jury. Shanklin remains in jail without bond.

When I was in public school, over 50 years ago, it was
common to get corporal punishment.
While I was a normal and mild mannered student, I still did not escape the tongue of a paddle on rare occasion.
The most amusing time was when the female art teacher
got mad at me for something and told me to return at the
end of the day for a taste of her brand new paddle.
Well, it was way to large for her to handle. She really needed both hands, but she had to use one to hold up my heavy coat.
The paddle got tangled up in the coat and her attempt to connect with my fanny was a big failure.
Great moments of childhood.

I have children, so I think I understand your position.
In my day, corporal punishment was controlled. Boys got one swat or two with a board, depending on the gravity of the offense. Teachers didn’t just go off on the students and start whacking them in an uncontrolled fashion.
I would be fine with what I experienced, although no school my children attended has offered to dispense corporal punishment. Swats sting without injuring, and it does wonders for conduct. In my classrooms, except for parties or relaxed discipline, you could literally hear a pin drop. When the teacher was speaking, no one was acting out and preventing you from learning.
I know that some people think a child should never be struck. I believe that to be hideously mistaken. Contact sports like football, and even getting your butt kicked on the playground, yield valuable life lessons. Hollyweird movies notwithstanding, there’s only one way to get a bully off your back.
When children grow up and venture out into this world, they will face bitter consequences in many contexts. An unjust firing, a predatory boyfriend or girlfriend, a drunk coming out of the restaurant they’re going in to, muggers, rapists, military service...experience with violence, even low-level violence, is often the difference between life and death.
Children should be raised to survive in *this* world, not the world that cretinous refugees from the sixties still think—stupidly—that they can create.
Peace? Those “peaceniks” don’t even know what peace is.
Peace is not something that can be attained without struggle, and generally armed struggle. This is because peace is not a permanent condition, but an interval. It is the interval between the last time we kicked evil’s butt, and the next time evil attacks. And there will always be a next time, right until the final trump.

My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Shavender, had a paddle in the classroom with a applique on it that showed a little boy in knickers and a little girl in petticoats, both bent over, with he caption: “Never spank a child in the face, nature provides a better place.”
She could use that paddle as well, as I experienced a more than a few times.
Perhaps she said "Thank you sir, may I have another" 19 times.
No doubt, like most of the parents on this site, her parents thought only ‘bad things’ happen at ‘other’ public schools...not the “wonderful” schools she’s enrolled in.
Using a belt was wrong. I do believe a paddle should have been used. I remember back in the 50’s I would get whacked across the knuckles with a band of rulers by nuns, or head bashed against the blackboard. They even made me whack myself on the knuckles until I cried. If I didn’t cry then they’d do it for me. I learned to cry early! When I told my father (I only did it the first time) instead of sympathy, he took off his belt and blistered my butt. By the time I got to the 6th grade I was a very good boy. Ahhh, the joys of remembering my youth.
That’s the way it was when I was in school. I do not mind the paddle as long as the student knows up front what the punishment is for said infraction.
The problem with some of the teachers today is that they come unhinged. One of my kids had a teacher lose it one day and start throwing books across the room at all of them. I don’t trust the teachers in the public school system any longer.
The “public school” is BY FAR, the largest, most expensive, most subversive, and most destructive entitlement program in the country.
The “public school” is better understood as the “government school collective”.
It is silly to imagine that you can fix the public schools, because the very concept itself is communist.
Any child that comes out of the government school collective with their moral compass and common sense intact does so in spite of the government school indoctrination, not because of it.
If you want to win the culture war, have lots of children (see my tagline) and homeschool them or form your own school cooperative with your church or synagogue and like-minded friends and relatives.
Nobody loves your children more than you do.
Nobody can teach your children like you can.
Your children would love nothing better than to be taught by you, if you start doing so before they are corrupted by the government school collective.
It is hypocritical for you to submit your children to an authority with whom you fundamentally disagree. And your children will know it.
If you have children, make whatever sacrifices you must to get them out of the public schools.
DO NOT FEED THE BEAST!
Especially not with your own children.
When I was in 4th grade we had a 20 word spelling test every Thursday and the teacher would grade them over night. On Friday, every boy and girl got one swat with a paddle for every missed word.
The result was that every boy in class wore every pair of under wear he owned on Friday and the girls wore extra slips. (This was about 1955).

Well, there’s an image to warm a pedophile’s heart! I guess people had a blunted sensibility back then.
Still, it’s unusual that the teacher in this particular case was convicted of sexual battery for spanking a child, as opposed to physical assault/battery or abuse. I wonder if there were aggravating circumstances not mentioned in the news report that led prosecutors in that direction.

I graduated from a public high school almost 50 years ago. Our History and English teachers began the commie indoctrination ever so slightly in 6th grade and picked it up big time in high school.
Bus rides. Waiting in lines. Dealing with JERKS. Quirky teachers. Oy.
And don’t give me, “Oh, you have to deal with jerks in the workplace so school is a good place to learn how.”
First, the best place to learn how to deal with jerks is in a martial arts school or military boot camp.
Second, in the workplace, at least in the professional workplace, even abusive language is forbidden, let alone assault on fellow workers.
The very few jerks I’ve encountered in the workplace never lasted long. They were always on the short list.
