California legislators don hoodies for slain Florida teen

SACRAMENTO -- California lawmakers donned hoodies Thursday in the Capitol to express outrage over the killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black teen shot to death by a self-styled neighborhood watch leader in a case that has generated an impassioned national debate about race and justice.

The lawmakers, led by the legislative Black, Latino and Asian Pacific Islander caucuses, adjourned in memory of Martin as pressure grew around the country for Florida authorities to file charges against the alleged killer, George Zimmerman.

..."Why, in America, almost 150 years after slavery, is African-American life not valued at the same level as their white counterpart?" said Assemblyman Steve Bradford, D-Inglewood. "If the roles were reversed, I assure you, there would be an African-American in jail right now facing possibly the death penalty."

...Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said that wearing a hoodie was an "effort to try to stand in the shoes of young black males who we know are often targeted for harassment, discrimination and are immediately suspect by virtue of the color of their skin and what they wear."

...A trial for Martin's killing must be held, Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, said.

...Assemblywoman Holly Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, said she was saddened that she had to sit down with her 12-year old son to describe what the racial epithet "coon," meant. Zimmerman, at one point in his conversation with the 9-11 dispatcher, called Martin a word that many believe is "coon." The word could be the basis of a hate crime, an option being explored by the U.S. Department of Justice.

US tourism is a $50billion annual industry.

The first order of business by elected officials; Federal, State and local, should be eliminating street violence and random acts of terror.

The national and global attention on this case and the Florida murder of two British tourists is illustrating that lawlessness is rampant in the US.

Not hyperbole - read the statistics.

Black hate, and resentment - racism - is stoked by leftists ritualistically. Socialists love the power of corrupting a whole race of people and the spilling of innocent blood. It’s called multiculturalism.

Didn’t they get the memo Wearing a hoodie is so “two days ago.”

Didn’t they hear everyone is laughing their heads off at the absurdity of this — it reveals the Dems as the criminals they are. They are making fun of themselves without realizing.

So, keep wearing the hoodies, dummies.

Had two unsolved murders here in Salinas, CA this month. A 15 year old and a 17 year old. Both Hispanic. No witnesses will come forward. No hoodies in Sacramento noting these events.

Lawmakers wear hoodies to protest shooting - March 29, 2012 - The chairman of the Latino Caucus called on Florida lawmakers to revise the self-defense law that he says allows people to kill in cold blood and walk away with no consequences. Assm. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell, says the spirit of the law should fit the letter of the law.

I wish all these morons wanting to use the Trayvon situation would forgo the hoodies and climb into body bags instead, and then shoot themselves...

If they ride around town at night with the wrong color hoodie, they may not have to shoot themselves. Some 17 yr. old punk will do it for them.

Maybe we can get the Florida legislature to wear sidearms in remembrance of all the innocent victims slain, unable to defend themselves, in gun control crazed CA.

If you want to be taken for a gangster adopt the gangster persona. And that fits very well with any California Legislature.

I had on a hoody yesterday, but I call it a hooded sweatshirt. It had ‘Harley Davidson’ on the back of it and goes rather nicely with my handmade ostrich Lucchese boots, plus my Glock fits in the pocket. I am not Trayvon!

Californians wearing hoodies?

Well, I moved here almost 2 decades ago from the East Coast. I was advised to dress in layers, to be prepared to shed stuff and to put stuff on too.

I didn’t heed the advice, and sometimes when checking out parts of the state (esp. the coast), I’ve had improvise bundling up. Lucky for me, for this they sell hoodies.

One of my favorites comes from the creeps-up-on-ya fog bank of Capitola. It’s a great beach by day yet only to get really chilly. (Pismo Beach solves this with clam chowder.) So I bought a hoodie from Zelda’s.

I don’t get attacked (yet!) for wearing this, I get asked where Zelda comes from,
