Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum have agreed to a debate in May sponsored by the Texas Republican party. “Both my staff and myself have reached out to the campaign of Governor Mitt Romney and have been told that they are considering attending the debate,” state-party chairman Steve Munisteri says in a press release. Texas Republicans have contributed over $40 million to the Republican National Committee over the last eight years and have given millions of dollars to numerous national candidates including Gov. Romney."

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Just a few days out from the Wisconsin primary, Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista, officially opened their state headquarters in Green Bay, a hotbed of Republican voters in the state.
But for cynics who think the grand opening is just a shell game of keeping up appearances (recent polls show Gingrich running fourth behind Ron Paul in the state), the campaign would say they’re severely misguided: this office will be open through November, and it’s part of a grand strategy of securing the nomination in Tampa.

But whatever happens in Tuesday’s primary, state campaign director Robert Lorge says his mission post-primary will be to help Gingrich persuade what he calls “soft delegates” here in the state to support him: 3 RNC delegates, plus the 3 delegates from each of the eight congressional districts who could become unbound at the convention.

Lorge said that in conference calls with the national team there has been discussion about the possibility of consolidating Santorum and Gingrich delegates at the Republican National Convention in order to overcome Romney’s delegate math.
“I imagine there’s going to be a lot of negotiation and compromising between the pro-Newt Gingrich and the pro-Rick Santorum delegates,” he said. “You may have a Newt Gingrich-Rick Santorum ticket. You may have a Rick Santorum-Newt Gingrich ticket. Nobody knows how that ticket’s going to work out. But I imagine it’ll end up being something like that.”
Pointing to Gingrich’s accomplishments in the House, Lorge believes delegates will see that his candidate is the only one with the experience necessary to be the White House.
“America is a republic,” Lorge said. “We’re not a democracy. We don’t believe in mob rule. We hire people by electing them to represent us. We’re a representative democracy, that’s what we talk about. Our Founding Fathers were very wise in not having a straight, pure democracy. We have a republic for a reason so that wiser decisions, calm decisions can be made in the best interest of the nation as a whole and that is what Newt Gingrich is all about.”
The amount of chaos and strategy that would be involved in the open convention scenario is so mentally demanding that it’s hard to imagine any other candidate but Newt Gingrich believing it is possible. And perhaps the reckless challenge of it all is giving the candidate a new skip in his step. It’s hard not to notice that Newt Gingrich is laughing more on the campaign trail these days. Shaking hands at the ropeline, Gingrich has the habit of leaning back for a good belly laugh – the consummate cheerful candidate."....

I think it’s an excellent idea to whip up another debate. Yay for Texas!
Of course, Mitt is uncommitted at this time. He’s currently on a pedestal with the delegate count and a whole fresh slew of endorsements. Something has to happen between now and then to mess up Mitt’s momentum - actually he doesn’t have any real momentum. Santorum won Louisiana, and all the endorsements and talk of inevitability is just fake momentum for Mitt. The *illusion* of momentum.
It’s not over, folks. And to borrow from Mark Levin: we don’t need a Senator to tell us what to do.
Remember how Reagan took his messages directly to the people? Let the ABR candidates bypass Rove, Morning Joe, and Mitt’s scorched earth, etc., and take it directly to the people, as well.
Let’s see what happens!
Actually, I think this is the best solution, and just the perfect thing to throw a monkey wrench into the GOP-E’s plans. And wipe out Mitt’s fake momentum. :-)
Romney will not have secured the nomination by the Texas primary. But, by then, he may be the only candidate to be able to win the nomination on the first ballot.
He should commit to the debate on the proviso that at least one candidate is in the race that can be nominated at the convention (at this time, the only other candidate who can be nominated at the convention is Rick Santorum).
As it is, I think Rick will drop out after the Pennsylvania primary, if not after Wisconsin. He has to win Wisconsin to remain credible; and, then, he has to win Pennsylvania and one or more other state voting on that day.
But, if Santorum wins Wisconsin (which doesn’t matter much in terms of delegates since it isn’t WTA), and then wins not only Pennsylvania but also New Jersey (which is WTA) and does well in New York, or something like that, the nomination would still be ip for grabs in the sense that Romney could be denied a first ballot victory The Texas primary would be meaningful, and the California primary would be crucial.
I agree with you about Newt. He is “on”. His speech at Georgetown was stellar. Not the confrontational style in the two SC debates that catapulted him to victory in that states’s primary. But, very engaging, full of interesting facts, stories that ordinary people can relate to, very reasonable, inspiring in places, and his discussion about the loss of religion in our discussion was very poignant.
But, what’s he doing in Wisconsin? Isn’t he just running interference for Romney? He’d going to tip close Congressional Districts to Romney; and, he may also tip the state’s at-large delegates (who will be awarded WTA to the winner of the statewide popular vote).
Don’t Newt’s new found serenity AND his effort in Wisconsin point to a secret deal between him and Mitt?

Isn't that special?

Plus this: There are lots of people betting on, including me, that Santorum won't be able to withstand the continuing and escalating GOP establishment push via endorsements, backrooms, gop-affiliated entities endorsing romney... That it is quite possible rick will fold and take a promise that he will have a kingmaker place in the party if he does "the right thing" and next time will be his turn... this is what I am watching for...
Romney could have it wrapped up by then, though, right? We need Rick to beat him in Wisconsin to keep this going, but Romney outspending him by huge margins is hurting.
A lot of people are. I also have no doubt that the Romney camp is behind a lot of rumors about both Santorum and Gingrich - hard to know who's spinning what or how they plan to play their cards.
I'd heard that Mitt is ahead by a mere 7 points in Wisconsin. That's not much for the $40 Million Candidate to show for the relentless campaign attacks on his opposition -- not much for the GOP Establishment to brag about quickly trotting out endorsements for the "presumed" One.
If any candidate hopes to win, they have to master this discipline first. Or else they lose. This is also just a small portion of winning the Presidency. Any candidate who has trouble with this basic organizational ability, has no business any where near the Presidency.
This is exactly why Obama created over 80 Czars to do the job for him that he was unable to do. All other Presidents before him had organizational skills and required no outside help.
We certainly don't need another failed Senator/Trainee in the White House, do we?
The latest poll from Rasmussen came out late yesterday, shows Romney now ahead by 10 points, with less than 6% undecided. Paul went down 4 points and Romney gained over 5 from a poll taken 2 days before that.
Romney is difinately gaining momentum.

The debate should be held and all of the candidates should participate.
The anchor should be a Republican and conservative and perhaps even a libertarian.
The thrust should be “Kill Obama” every question and every answer should be intended to make a cut and draw Obama blood.
There should be agreement to lay off each other but bring out the long knives to produce the maximum Obama blood and Gore.
At the end, Obama should be cut to ribbons and politically in extremis. The MSM should be apoplectic with rage at the total absence of fairness that would allow such a grisly spectacle to occur on TV
It’s time for conservatives to reassess and remember why Newt Gingrich brought about the 1994 Republican Revolution and realize that he is the only one ready and prepared to do it again.

“The Romney campaign has been hitting Newt Gingrich hard over the 1990s ethics case that resulted in the former Speaker being reprimanded and paying a $300,000 penalty. Before the Iowa caucuses, Romney and his supporting super PAC did serious damage to Gingrich with an ad attacking Gingrich’s ethics past. Since then, Romney has made other ads and web videos focusing on the ethics matter, and at the Republican debate in Tampa Monday night, Romney said Gingrich “had to resign in disgrace.”
In private conversations, Romney aides often mention the ethics case as part of their larger argument that Gingrich would be unelectable in a race against President Obama.
Given all the attention to the ethics matter, it’s worth asking what actually happened back in 1995, 1996, and 1997. The Gingrich case was extraordinarily complex, intensely partisan, and driven in no small way by a personal vendetta on the part of one of Gingrich’s former political opponents. It received saturation coverage in the press; a database search of major media outlets revealed more than 10,000 references to Gingrich’s ethics problems during the six months leading to his reprimand. It ended with a special counsel hired by the House Ethics Committee holding Gingrich to an astonishingly strict standard of behavior, after which Gingrich in essence pled guilty to two minor offenses. Afterwards, the case was referred to the Internal Revenue Service, which conducted an exhaustive investigation into the matter. And then, after it was all over and Gingrich was out of office, the IRS concluded that Gingrich did nothing wrong. After all the struggle, Gingrich was exonerated.
I wrote about the matter at the time, first in a 1995 article about Gingrich’s accusers and then in a 1999 piece on the Internal Revenue Service report that cleared Gingrich. I hate to say it, but this thing will be over by the end of April. By May 29 all 3 will be out of the race. Their money will dry up by then. The momentum for the nominee has begun. It is what it is, now we have to start planning alternate plan B, what ever that is.
And yes, this entire Primary has been a disaster. Like 2008, the wrong candidates were picked by both sides within the party again.

But you did hit the nail on the head. All this stirring up of race animosity is to boost “protected minority group” enthusiasm and turn out for the election. (Yes “protected minority group” vote 97% Rat but the actual numbers of those who vote is quite low, except in 2008!)
Also it has the added benefit of getting the “troops” stirred up to subtly intimidate in case the Arizona sheriff’s efforts actually turn into anything.
Everybody should contact the Romney campaign and urge Mitt to avoid the Texas debate at all costs! Plenty of good solid reasons for him to avoid it.
Then Texans can return the compliment and avoid his name at the polls. And if Romney doesn’t win in Texas, the argument against his nomination is strengthened. He should go to the convention as lame as possible, if he has to go at all.

Not if WE don’t make it so, it won’t. This primary is a little more than half over. Fortunes have turned on a dime. Sure, there’s some damage from Mitt’s Florida blitzkrieg & losing the rest of the Deep South, but as long as Mitt’s & Rick’s lips are flappin’, there’s the very real potential for one or both of them to crash n’ burn themselves. And remember that Newt’s favorables always rise after people’s memories are jogged by just how inspiring he is.
I am COUNTING on Newt taking Texas!
