Here's the real reason this otherwise minor story is getting so much airplay.
This would be the old Standard Oil station owned by the Martin family!
For a long time Rich's dad was the only black man in DC to actually own a gas station ~ he'd stood firm against a company buyout even when the city government (with a black mayor) was trying to force all the independents to undertake ruinously expensive modifications.
Brings back old times ~ and the Martin family was in the headlines.
NOTE: Way back when I first came to the DC area you could get an efficiency condo apartment (One room with kitchen, toilet and balcony) in the Watergate for $12,000! By the time I got out of the Army (which had slashed my income to levels where I couldn't even pay a mortgage like that) the same condo unit was selling for $120,000. Today a unit like it, with no river view, is going for $240,000. You add a full bedroom to that the price jumps OVER $500,000.
