Having grown up in the inner-city, I am aware of the difficult realities that exist on the streets. One of the goals of my foundation, the Wade’s World Foundation, is to continue to spread the message that the violence needs to stop.” Chicago was besieged by gun violence on March 29.

1. If you don’t follow a current issue for 20 years you don’t know it. Last time checked there aren’t too many players still in the league from 20 years ago so my assumptions are very founded.

2. Like a lot of those old names there is no one way to spell it. I know of a Dewaine, Dwane, Dwain...and I personally know of a Duwaine whose parents are both Polish. So woopty freakin do they spell it different. Are your language skills that limited that you can’t pronounce ‘wy’? Can you say Wyoming?

3. Your last response really has me questioning it as I specifically stated “I never defend ghetto names” yet you still ask me to when you dredge up one from the gutter.

In short, go climb back into safe little hole where only 40 ‘real’ names exist and human creativity is stifled.

Dewaine, Dwane, Dwain are all instantly recognizable and straightforward to pronounce.

But Dwyane?

As in Wyoming?

I think you are making the man’s point.

I’m not a huge NBA fan but I know there’s no Heat player who pronounces his name Dwy-ane.

He was stuck up on the “wayne” vs. “wyane” part. My point is that we all can pronounce ‘w’, y is almost always silent before a vowel, and the ‘ane’ part should be self-explanatory.

You said I "don’t know anything about basketball or peoples (sic) names". Basketball is far more than NBA. I personally prefer watching grade school and high school basketball. Most of the kids aren't jerks. Except these guys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6v-bW6wxoY

You seemed to think the name was Dwayne although it is spelled Dwyane. Did you notice that someone else called you on it? By your Wyoming example, it would be pronounced Dwy-ane, yet other people tell me it is Duh-wane. So how would YOU pronounce it with your language skills? Would it be Dwy-ane even though it is Duh-wane?

Jayqucea was a very nice girl, and I resent you implying that she (or her name) was from the gutter. And THEN you tell me that I want human creativity to be stifled by calling it a gutter name?? Sounds racist. I didn't ask you to defend her name but to maybe see if you knew some Gaelic origin, since, being 3/4 Irish, I would be interested.

I don't mind people making up names, but it would help if they would include a phonetic pronunciation in parentheses. My wife had a friend who named her son Ju-Juan (Joo-ahn), not (Joo-joo-un) or (Woo-wahn). Or then there's young Jayqucea (Jock-see). See how helpful that is?

So, the NBA guy needs to tell me if it's Dwyane (Dwy-ane), according to your Wyoming rule, or Dwyane (Duh-wane) according to his fans? Another one is Brett (Brett) Favre (Farve). I knew a guy named Favre (Fov-ruh). And another guy named Favre (Fov-ray). As in Raymann. I knew a guy named Pecot (Pea-cot) whose brother's name was Pecot (Peck-oh).

I'm not about to crawl into a hole. The world is too fascinating. I mean, just names alone make it all worth doing.
