I thought about the "good cop" possibility, and agree it's a possibility. He may have some street cred that he needs to preserve; even if he's not fishing for testimonial evidence.

I did wonder if he had heard the Zimmerman / dispatch recording. If so, how did he fit that into the two contact scenario.

IMO he couldn't have heard the dispatch recording and have that opinion. So either he hadn't heard it or was using the opinion to further another purpose.

It could have just as easily been “we're looking into the possibility of ______________________ and if racial profiling was an issue as a reply to something others had said. People sometimes hear what their preconceived ideas want to hear.
OTOH the officer should be target of internal investigation to see if he has an agenda.

Still would like to know the family's background ala “Joe the Plumber” No one in the media has touched that angle.
