COLUMBUS, Ind. — Gun owners can learn about safety and sharpen their shooting skills at a Citizens’ Firearms Safety Course offered by the Columbus Police Department.

The course is a one-day class held at the police department’s shooting range. Sessions tentatively are scheduled for May 12 and Sept. 15.

The course includes a half-day classroom lecture on basic safety, rules and guidelines, proper storage, maintenance, shooting fundamentals, shooting range safety and applicable Indiana law.

Participants will apply the skills they learn at the police firing range.

But the class is focused on safety — not shooting, said Detective Sgt. Tom Foust.

He said gun owners need to be familiar with their weapons and safety procedures. The course is a basic safety course for new or inexperienced gun owners but also can serve as a good refresher course for longtime gun owners, Foust said.

“Anybody can take something away from this course,” he said.

The course costs $25, and applicants should bring their firearm and ammunition and wear proper attire for the shooting range.

Applications are available online at columbuspd.com by clicking on CPD News on the left side of the screen and following the link to download the application. They also can be picked up at the police department.

Saw a similar course hear in Jacksonville, FL. Unfortunately, the Sheriff required the serial number of the gun to be used. I couldn’t think of a logical reason they would need that.
